UCO Wins Finale, Headed to Postseason Next Week

Bronchos Beat Missouri Western 5-0 In Season Finale

EDMOND – Dax Sharp threw a complete-game shutout on the final day of the season to power Central Oklahoma to a 5-0 win over Missouri Western, clinching the series for the Bronchos.

UCO, which dropped the opener Thursday night, battled back for a win on Friday before earning the Game 3 win on Saturday. The Bronchos finished the regular season 33-15 overall and 23-13 in the MIAA. That earned UCO the No. 4 seed in next week's MIAA Baseball Championship. Central will take on No. 5 seed Rogers State in the quarterfinals Thursday morning.

Saturday, Sharp was brilliant. The senior lefty from Pryor allowed just six hits and didn't issue a walk the entire game. He struck out three batters on the day, getting 15 flyouts and eight more groundouts.

Sharp allowed a one-out double in the first and a leadoff double in the second but didn't allow another hit until the eighth inning. Then, MWSU hit a pair of singles but couldn't push any runners across. MWSU got two more in the ninth but again couldn't get a run across.

UCO took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Ty Hammack scored on a fielder's choice. He led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to third on Orlando Gonzalez's single through the right side. Grant Randall then reached on a fielder's choice and Hammack scored on the play to make it 1-0.

UCO got three more in the sixth. Hammack's double to right center scored Ty Chapman, then Randall singled through the right side to score Caden Robertson and Ty Hammack and give UCO a 4-0 lead.

In the eighth, Brooks Miller singled to third base and scored Gonzalez to make it the final, 5-0.

Central Oklahoma heads to Joplin, Missouri for the MIAA Baseball Championship next week. The Bronchos meet Rogers State in the quarterfinals. UCO won 2 of 3 against Rogers this season, winning at Claremore and in Edmond before losing the finale in Claremore.
