Bronchos Fall In Regional Opener

Central Oklahoma Loses 14-8 To Arkansas Tech, Meets Harding In Consolation Round Friday

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Oklahoma dropped its NCAA Tournament first round matchup Thursday night, falling 14-8 to Arkansas Tech in the Central Regional.

UCO (36-16) will play Harding in an elimination game Friday at 2 p.m. to keep its season alive.

"They got us early and when we rallied back, they kept extending their lead so hats off to them, it was there night," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We did okay at the plate, but we couldn't stop them from scoring and it got us. Now we're down to our final chance. We have to play better every single pitch and see if we can't find a way to get it done tomorrow."

Central Oklahoma gave up all 14 runs in bunches on Thursday. Arkansas Tech rallied for six runs in the second, five in the fifth, and three more in the sixth.

Dax Sharp got the start for the Bronchos and took the loss. He threw 1 2/3 innings, giving up the six runs on four hits. He also walked two batters. Austin Burda got UCO out of the second and through the third, but he gave up four runs on four hits and a walk. Michael Lopez gave up one run on three hits to get UCO out of the fourth. Preston Giltner, Chase Yarger, Brady Gilmore, Denton Whiteside, and Trent Gerber all made relief appearances on Thursday.

UCO scored its eight runs off nine hits. Brooks Miller led off the third with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Aiden Proctor, and then scored on an RBI groundout by Ty Chapman to make it 6-1.

The Bronchos rallied for five in the fifth to keep it interesting, and did it all with two outs. Miller hit a two-out single and Proctor singled behind him. Chapman kept it going with another single and scored Miller to make it 11-2. Then Caden Robertson reached on an ATU throwing error, allowing Proctor and Chapman to score to make it 11-4.

After Ty Hammack drew a walk and stole second, Orlando Gonzalez reached on a single to the pitcher. Both Chapman and Hammack scored on the play to make it 11-6.

In the bottom of the seventh, Robertson hit a solo home run off the scoreboard in right center field to make it 11-7. The shot was his 23rd of the season, which ties the UCO school record set by Ray Danzy in 2001.

Hammack followed Robertson with a double to center field and he moved to third on a flyout by Gonzalez before scoring on a groundout by Grant Randall. That made it the final, 14-8. UCO couldn't find any more offense on the night.

Central Oklahoma and Harding have not played a baseball game against one another since March 2000. UCO won 12 of 14 contests between the schools during a four-year stretch the two were members of the Lone Star Conference.
