Bronchos Sweep Fort Smith

Central Oklahoma Beats UAFS 4-1 In Game 3 For MIAA Series Sweep

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma completed the three-game sweep of Arkansas Fort Smith Sunday with a 4-1 win in Game 3 at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO ran its win streak to 12 games with the victory to improve to 28-8 on the season and 18-6 in the MIAA.

"We hit it well, but right to them, a lot today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We got a good performance from out pitching staff all weekend. We had a few bumps, but we found a way to get three wins and that was big. But we have to move on and get ready for the next one."

Central visits Northeastern State Wednesday for a midweek MIAA matchup before taking on No. 1 Central Missouri next weekend in Warrensburg, Mo.

Sunday in Edmond, Dax Sharp picked up another win on the mound with six strong innings for the Bronchos. He gave up one run on five hits and two walks and struck out four batters. The one run, scored in the bottom of the second, was just the second allowed by Sharp this season and the first run allowed in the previous 18.2 innings of work.

UCO went to the bullpen in the seventh and Brayden Thompson was first out, but he walked the first batter on four pitches and UCO turned to Chase Yarger, who retired six of seven without allowing a hit to keep Fort Smith at bay.

Valek Cisneros came on in the bottom of the ninth and though he walked two batters, he got one groundout, one flyout, and ended the game with a strikeout to earn his eighth save of the season.

Arkansas Fort Smith struck first with the RBI single in the second inning and UCO was quick to respond with the same in the third. Aiden Proctor hit a one out single to center, then stole second with two outs. Ty Chapman hit a single to left field that scored Proctor to tie the game, 1-1.

UCO took a 3-1 lead with two swings of the bat in the third inning. Ty Hammack led off with a single through the left side before Orlando Gonzalez pelted a two-run home run to left field.

The Bronchos added one more late run to seal the win. Caden Robertson led off the eighth inning with a single to right field. He moved to second when Gonzalez reached on a throwing error by the UAFS pitcher, then Joe Ricchio was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carson Carpenter hit a deep fly ball to center field that allowed Robertson to score and make it the final, 4-1.

UCO had nine hits in the game. Grant Randall went 2-for-5 and Gonzalez 2-for-4. Chapman, Robertson, Hammack, Carpenter, and Proctor all had one hit each.
