Bronchos Take First League Matchup Against UAFS

Central Oklahoma Wins 6-1 Friday In MIAA Series

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma moved its winning streak to double digits with a 6-1 win over Arkansas Fort Smith Friday night as the Bronchos picked up a victory for the 10th game in a row.

UCO improved to 28-8 on the season with the win. The Bronchos are 16-6 in the MIAA. Fort Smith is 10-22 overall and 5-17 in league play.

The series was scheduled to be played in Fort Smith, Arkansas, home of the newest member in the MIAA. However, due to weather, the series is being played in Edmond. UCO played the game as the visiting team on its home field.

UCO got an eight-inning gem from sophomore right-hander Brett Pense, who improved to 4-0 with the win Friday. The Edmond native was dominant from start to finish, striking out nine batters in eight innings, allowing just five hits and only the one run. Brody Berlowitz struck out the side in the ninth to shut the door on Fort Smith.

Central's offense took a little while to get going on Friday night. The Bronchos had four hits in six innings, never two in the same frame, and trailed 1-0 heading to the top of the seventh inning. That's when the bats came alive, and UCO plated three runs on three hits in the inning.

Ty Hammack and Orlando Gonzalez led off with back-to-back singles before Carson Carpenter smacked a two-RBI triple to right center field to give the Bronchos a 2-1 lead. Matt Baughn scored Carpenter on a fielder's choice to make it 3-1.

Fort Smith's starting pitcher also threw 8.0 innings, but UCO tagged the bullpen for three more runs in the ninth to get to 6-1.

Joe Ricchio led off with a walk and Aiden Proctor pinch-ran for him at first base. Carpenter followed with a bunt single, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Baughn scored Proctor with a sacrifice fly to center field, then Grant Randall drew a two-out walk and stole second base before Ty Chapman smacked a two-RBI double to right center. Carpenter and Randall scored to make it the final, 6-1.

Central Oklahoma and Arkansas Fort Smith are scheduled to play Game 2 Saturday at 2 p.m. and will wrap up the three-game MIAA series Sunday at 1 p.m.
