Bronchos Drop 9-6 Decision To Northwest Missouri

UCO Left 13 Runners On Base in MIAA Loss

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma wasted a 14-hit outing by leaving 13 runners on base in dropping a 9-6 MIAA decision to Northwest Missouri Thursday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos had plenty of scoring opportunities, but left the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings while stranding two runners on two other occasions.

UCO, which fell to 29-13 overall and 19-11 in the league with its fifth straight loss, will try to get back on track Friday in a noon doubleheader against the Bearcats.

"We had our chances and just couldn't come up with the key hit when we needed it," head coach John Martin said. "It's frustrating. The guys are battling, but we're just not doing the little things and keep digging ourselves in a hole."

NWMSU never trailed after taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Bronchos tied it in their first at bat as Grant Randall had a lead-off double off the right field wall, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Caden Robertson's groundout.

The Bearcats scored two more in the second, with UCO getting one back in the third on Robertson's massive no-doubt blast over the left field wall. It was the senior slugger's 21st home run, moving him into third place on the school's single-season list just two behind the record.

NWMSU made it 4-2 in the third and the Bronchos scored once in the bottom of that frame and again in the fourth to pull even.

Ty Hammock was hit by pitch to start the fourth, then Matt Baughn and Dylan Darnall followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Hammock scored on Randall's RBI fielder's choice, but that's all the damage UCO could do.

Hammack came through with a two-out run-scoring double in the fifth to drive in Robertson, who led off the inning with a base hit. That made it 4-4, but the Bearcats came back with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to go ahead 9-4.

The Bronchos scored once in the seven on Hammack's two-out RBI single up the middle and added an unearned run in the eighth to get within 9-6, but left the bases full both innings and then went down in order in the ninth.

Orlando Gonzalez led UCO's 14-hit attack with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, while Hammack had three hits and Robertson two.
