Central Sweeps Newman Series, Win Streak At Eight Games

Bronchos Win 7-2 Sunday For Third MIAA Series Sweep Of The Season

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma lefty Dax Sharp ran his scoreless streak up to 17 1/3 innings with another solid Sunday start for the Bronchos, who beat Newman 7-2 to sweep the season series Sunday at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO 7, Newman 2.

Sharp threw six scoreless innings, striking out five batters while only allowing three hits. UCO's offense did more than enough to support the starter and get UCO its eighth consecutive victory.

The Bronchos improved to 24-8 on the season with the win and are now 14-6 in the MIAA.

"It was good to get a win today because it's so hard to sweep a team in a three-game series," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Dax was really good today and we had to battle at the plate, but the guys found a way."

UCO didn't record a hit until the third inning, but had two then and scored two runs to take an early lead. The Bronchos added another in the fifth, and then two each in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game away.

Brayden Thompson followed Sharp out of the bullpen in the seventh and struck out two of the four batters he faced in another scoreless frame. Chase Yarger pitched the eighth, giving up one run on two hits. Valek Cisneros came on for the ninth and also gave up one run on one hit. Yarger added one strikeout and Cisneros added two, including a backward K on the 27th out.

Ty Hammack got the scoring started for Central in the bottom of the third inning, with an RBI double down the left field line scored Aidan Proctor. Joe Ricchio was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Grant Randall scored on the play.

In the fifth, Caden Robertson scored Ty Chapman, who tripled in front of Robertson, to make it 3-0. Robertson would ultimately see a 20-game hit streak ended Sunday. He finished the game 0-for-4 with an RBI. It's only the fourth game this season he did not record a hit and the first since February 15.

The Bronchos got two in the seventh thanks first to a wild play. Newman attempted to pickoff Ricchio at first, but the first baseman wasn't even on the bag. The errant throw by the pitcher allowed Orlando Gonzalez to score. Carson Carpenter followed with a double to right center that scored Ricchio.

Central's last two runs came in the eighth. Chapman's RBI groundout to shortstop scored Garrett Long and Hammack got a second RBI on the day with a single through the left side to score Randall and put the Bronchos up 7-1.

Newman got one in the eighth off Yarger on a fielder's choice. The Jets got one in the ninth of Cisneros on an RBI single to right field.

Central Oklahoma improved to 14-6 in MIAA play with Sunday's win. The Bronchos have played six MIAA series, winning four of them, including three 3-0 sweeps.

UCO hosts Rogers State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos play the RSU series one at a time during the middle of the week. UCO already beat the Hillcats in Claremore two weeks ago and looks for its fifth series win with a victory on Tuesday.

The Bronchos are scheduled to play back-to-back road series at Arkansas Fort Smith this coming weekend and at Central Missouri the following weekend.
