UCO Sweeps Missouri Southern

Bronchos Get 5-0 Sunday Win To Complete Three-Game MIAA Series Sweep

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma completed a three-game sweep of Missouri Southern with a 5-0 shutout victory in Game 3 Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 20-8 on the season and is now 10-6 in the MIAA. Missouri Southern is 16-11 and 9-8 in league play.

"That was big for us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Missouri Southern is always good and hard to beat, so to not only win the series but get the sweep is big. It's really hard to sweep a team but we found a way to get it done."

Facing a stiff north wind, the game went quick, ending in just two hours, six minutes. UCO got a solo home run from Grant Randall in the third, a sacrifice fly in the fifth, a two-run home run in the sixth, and finally an RBI single in the seventh.

UCO scattered eight hits to just four from Missouri Southern. Central Oklahoma senior lefty Dax Sharp got the start and was dominant in seven innings, giving up just three hits and three walks while striking out six batters.

Sunday was Sharp's first start of the season, but the Pryor, Oklahoma native has allowed only one earned run in 14 2/3 innings this season. Sunday also marked the second time Sharp has thrown 7.0 innings. His other time was also a scoreless performance in February last season.

UCO went to the bullpen in the eighth inning, but Tristan Wittau left the game after just two pitches with an injury. Gage Norvell followed and got two outs, issuing one walk. Denton Whiteside came on to get the final out of the eighth with a strikeout.

Valek Cisneros followed in the ninth and gave up one hit after a pair of groundouts before recording a strikeout to end the game.

Randall put the Bronchos on the board in the third inning with a solo home run. Ty Chapman scored Matt Baughn with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Joe Ricchio's two-run homer in the sixth also scored Orlando Gonzalez. And Caden Robertson scored Randall with an RBI single in the seventh to make it 5-0.

Central Oklahoma is in the midst of an eight-game homestand. The Bronchos are 3-0 through the first three and will host next Northeastern State Wednesday. UCO hosts Newman for a three-game series next weekend and will also host Rogers State to wrap up the homestand next week.
