Bronchos Swept In Hays

Central Oklahoma Goes 0-3 On MIAA Road Trip

HAYS, Kan. – Central Oklahoma was swept by Fort Hays State for the first time ever in a three-game series this weekend after the Bronchos failed to avoid the sweep with a 7-4 loss on Sunday.

UCO is now 16-8 on the season and 6-6 in the MIAA. Fort Hays State is 16-5 overall and 11-1 in league play.

"We really needed to get one today, getting swept is never where you want to be, but we didn't get it done so we have to move on and get ready for the next one," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We get right back to it on Tuesday and have a tough home series next weekend."

UCO visits Rogers State for a midweek MIAA matchup on Tuesday in Claremore before hosting Missouri Southern for a three-game series in Edmond beginning Friday.

Central Oklahoma went ahead 1-0 for the third straight time this weekend, which ultimately proved to not be a good sign. Ty Chapman hit a one-out single in the top of the first inning, and moved to third on Caden Robertson's single up the middle. Chapman scored on Ty Hammack's fielder's choice groundball that left Robertson out but UCO up 1-0.

But then Hays had another home run outburst. The Tigers hit three home runs and two doubles during a six-run third inning to take command of the series finale.

Robertson got three of those back in the fifth with his MIAA-leading 13th home run of the season. His three-run shot scored Chapman and Grant Randall, and made the game, 6-4.

Hays added one more insurance run and did so via another home run in the eighth inning. The Tigers hit nine on the week, putting four over the fence Saturday and Sunday after just one in the opener.

Central Oklahoma managed 11 hits on Sunday. Robertson went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run. Chapman went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Randall, Hammack, Davon Brady, Aidan Proctor, Matt Baughn, and Garrett Long all had one hit each.

Brady Gilmore got the start for the Bronchos and threw 2 2/3 innings. He gave up six runs on seven hits and struck out three batters. Dax Sharp threw 3 1/3 out of the bullpen, allowing just three hits and two walks, but no runs. He also struck out three. Brody Berlowitz finished the game with two innings pitched, giving up one run on one hit. He also struck out three in the game.
