UCO Drops Game 1 At Hays

Bronchos Lose 4-3 In 10 Innings In First Game Of Three-Game Series

HAYS, Kan. – Central Oklahoma lost Game 1 of its three-game MIAA series at Fort Hays State Friday on a walkoff in the 10th inning.
 
Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. UCO is 16-6 on the season and now 6-4 in the MIAA. The host Tigers improved to 14-5 overall and 9-1 in league play.
 
Central Oklahoma had a 1-0 lead but had to come back from a 3-1 deficit to force extra innings. Fort Hays State got a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt to get a runner in scoring position. After an intentional walk, Fort Hays ended it with an RBI single up the middle to win the game.
 
Tristan Wittau took the loss after entering the game in the bottom of the 10th. Brett Pense got the start for the Bronchos and threw a season-high 7.0 innings, striking out four batters. He gave up three runs on five hits. Only one run was earned.
 
Dax Sharp relieved Pense and threw the eighth inning, retiring Hays in order. Chase Yarger threw the ninth, getting UCO out of the inning allowing two hits and a walk.
 
Central Oklahoma got the early lead with a bases loaded balk in the fourth inning. Joe Ricchio reached on a fielder's choice, then stole second. Orlando Gonzalez walked, and then Garrett Long reached on an error to load the bases. Ricchio scored to make it 1-0 UCO in the top of the fourth.
 
Fort Hays took the lead with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff single, Pense's throwing error allowed another runner on. Hays moved the runners with a sac-bunt and then an RBI groundout scored the first. Hays took the lead on a two-out RBI double.
 
Hays made it 3-1 in the seventh on a two-out home run. Central left runners on base in each of the next three innings and two on in the eighth.
 
In the ninth, UCO got a one-out double from Grant Randall and then with two outs, back-to-back hits with an RBI double from Caden Robertson and an RBI single from Ty Chapman.
 
Chapman went 3-for-4 Friday with an RBI and two stolen bases. Randall was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Robertson went 1-for-4 with a double and Orlando Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with UCO's only other hit.
 
Central Oklahoma and Fort Hays State play again Saturday at 2 p.m. Game 3 of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
