UCO Loses Shootout In Hays

Bronchos Fall 13-12, Lose Series In Kansas

HAYS, Kan. – Central Oklahoma went back and forth with Fort Hays State again Saturday, but again, the Bronchos fell short by one run in the end.

UCO dropped its second MIAA series of the season with the loss. The Bronchos went 1-2 at Washburn before sweeping Fort Hays State and going 2-1 at home against Pitt State. Central Oklahoma is now 16-7 on the season and 6-5 in league play. Fort Hays State is 15-5 on the year and 10-1 in the MIAA.
 
Central Oklahoma had the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning with one out, but couldn't get the game-tying run across the plate. Caden Robertson reached on a fielder's choice as FHSU got a force out at home for the second out of the inning. Ty Hammack struck out to end the game.
 
The Bronchos and the Tigers went blow-for-blow in the first half of Saturday's game. Through four innings, Fort Hays State led 9-8. All 17 runs came via a home run. There were nine homers in those first four innings.
 
Grant Randall led off the game with a solo shot to left. Then after falling behind 6-1, UCO rallied to take the lead with a huge seventh inning.
 
Orlando Gonzalez hit a two-run homer, Davan Brady hit a two-run home run, Garrett Long hit a solo shot, and Robertson followed with another two-run home run. UCO led 8-6 going to the bottom half of the inning. FHSU took a 9-6 lead then and never trailed again.
 
The Bronchod did tie it up with an RBI groundout by Robertson to make it 9-9, but Fort Hays added four more in the bottom of the sixth to go up 13-9.
 
In the seventh, Brady hit his second home run of the game to make it 13-11. Ty Chapman hit a solo homer in the eighth to make it 13-12.
 
Randall, Chapman, Robertson, and Brady all had two hits on Saturday. Hammack, Gonzalez, Drake Lee and Long all had one to give UCO a dozen in the game. The Bronchos got 10 extra-base hits in the game, with seven home runs and three doubles.
 
Danny Satterlee got the start for UCO and threw 2.0 innings. Brett McComas, Trent Gerber, and Michael Lopez all threw one inning. Lopez struck out a team-high three batters. Preston Giltner faced four batters in the sixth inning, Denton Whiteside then followed and got six outs. Brayden Thompson and Gage Norvell finished off the eighth inning.
 
Central Oklahoma and Fort Hays State play Sunday at 1 p.m. in the final game of the three-game series. UCO swept Hays in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2024, and has not been swept by the Tigers since joining the MIAA in 2012.
