Bronchos Get First Win In Runaway Ending

Central Oklahoma Beat Southeastern Oklahoma State 9-3 Sunday Night In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma picked up its first win of the new season Sunday night when the Bronchos beat Southeastern Oklahoma State 9-3 in the Edmond First Pitch Classic at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO (1-2) broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, then ran away with things in the bottom of the eighth, scoring five more runs to cap of the victory.

The Bronchos wrap up the 9-team festival Monday when Central Oklahoma plays East Central at 4 p.m. in the 14th and final game of the four-day season-opening event.

"It was good to get the win and get that pressure off of us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "No one this team was happy with an 0-2 start and we're really glad we're not 0-3. The win also gives the guys some confidence and we can always use more of that. We need to play well for one more tomorrow and keep getting better."

Central Oklahoma and Southeastern Oklahoma State had quite the battle going on in Edmond Sunday night. Both teams had a hit in the first inning. Both teams had three hits going to the bottom of the fourth inning with the score still locked at 0-0. That's when UCO struck first.

Orlando Gonzalez reached on a fielding error by the SOSU pitcher. He later stole second base and moved to third on a flyout. Garrett Long was up with two outs in the inning when he turned a pitch and drove it deep to right center for a two-run home run.

Southeastern answered with one back in the fifth by way of a solo home run from Gage Dollins, whose father played for the Bronchos in the 1990s.

UCO countered with another punch. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Ty Hammack tripled and Carson Carpenter doubled to score him and give UCO a 3-1 lead.

Back to Southeastern in the top of the sixth, the blows continued when SOSU hit a two-run home run to tie the game.

In the bottom half, UCO would get the go-ahead run with small ball. Luke Stout led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, then third on a wild pitch. Long was at the plate and he hit a groundball to the right side of the infield to score Stout and give the Bronchos a 4-3 lead.

In the eighth, Grant Randall hit an RBI single to center field to score Matt Baughn. Drake Lee hit a sac-fly to right field to score Long. Randall eventually scored on a wild pitch. Chapman scored on a Hammack double to right center. And then Hammack crossed the plate thanks to a sac-fly from Carson Carpenter to make it the final, 9-3.

Randall led UCO with three hits, finishing 3-for-3 with two walks, a run and an RBI. Long was 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBIs. Hammack was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Chapman, Gonzalez, and Stout added hits to give UCO 11 in the game.

Chase Yarger picked up the win coming out of the bullpen. Brady Gilmore got the start and was strong into the fifth inning. His day ended after 4 1/3, with five hits allowed, one run, and two walks. Gilmore also struck out two batters.

Austin Burda was first out of the bullpen, but he gave up a two-run homer that tied the game 3-3. He did get one strikeout on the day.

Yarger came on in the sixth to get UCO out of the inning with the game still tied. He finished the seventh and struck out three batters on the night, giving up only two hits.

John Demcher made his UCO debut Sunday, throwing 2/3 of an inning out of the bullpen. He got two flyouts before issuing a walk. Tristan Wittau came on and struck out the final batter of the eighth inning.

Valek Cisneros, an All-American in 2024, made his season debut in the ninth. The fifth-year senior got a flyout and back-to-back strikeouts to seal the win.

Central Oklahoma's six-man staff struck out nine batters on Sunday night.

UCO wraps up the busy opening weekend festival on Monday afternoon against East Central. The Bronchos are going to Arkadelphia, Arkansas next weekend for the Henderson State Invitational. UCO will play HSU, Ouachita Baptist, and two games against Southern Arkansas.
