Bronchos Drop MIAA Doubleheader

Central Oklahoma's Nine-Game Win Streak Ends With Pair Of Sunday Losses

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma dropped its first MIAA game of the season 4-3 at Washburn Sunday afternoon before letting a second game slip away, 10-5, Sunday evening.

The Bronchos are 9-4 on the season and now 0-2 in the MIAA after Washburn (5-5, 2-0) ended Central's nine-game win streak.

"I hate that we let the first one go," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We had a chance to get that one and we didn't. They jumped on us in the second game and it was always going to be hard to erase that kind of a deficit against a good team. Now we have to fight for the last one and get out of the series on a better note."

Central Oklahoma had a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 1 Sunday, but a leadoff solo home run tied it up. In the 10th, a leadoff walk put the go-ahead runner on base. A sacrifice bunt, plus a throwing error allowed that runner to get to third. Then a sac-fly ended it with that runner scoring from third on flyout to center field.

Washburn jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2 and it was 9-0 after two innings. The Bronchos did all they could to make it a game getting it back to 10-5.

Brett Pense got the start in Game 1 and struck out eight batters in six innings of work. He gave up two runs, both earned, on seven hits and two walks. Chase Yarger threw 2/3 of an inning before Tristan Wittau came on to get a strikeout and get UCO out of the seventh with the 3-2 lead.

Wittau gave up the home run that tied the game in the eighth, then Brett McComas came on to pitch after that. He issued the walk that allowed the game-winning baserunner on. John Demcher got one out and Dillon Dibrell came on, hit one batter, then got the flyout that resulted in a sac-fly walkoff win.

Four Bronchos had one hit each in the first game, including Orlando Gonzalez, who hit a double.

Danny Satterlee got the start in Game 2 and finished with just one inning pitched, eight runs allowed, four of which were earned, and two hits and a walk issued. Satterlee struck out two batters.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first with two outs, Ty Hammack dropped a flyball in center field and three runs scored to make it 4-0. Satterlee walked the leadoff in the second inning, then gave up three straight singles. Washburn led 6-0 when Trent Gerber came on to pitch, and 9-0 by the end of the inning.

Denton Whiteside got two outs, including one strikeout, to get UCO out of the second inning after Gerber. Gage Norvell came on to pitch in the third and threw 4.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run, one walk, and recording two strikeouts.

Preston Giltner and Andrew Talburt both threw one inning each.

Five Bronchos scattered six hits in Game 2, including Gonzalez who led the way with two hits. Caden Robertson hit a double and Ty Chapman hit his first home run of the season.

Central Oklahoma and Washburn wrap up the three-game MIAA series Monday at 1 p.m. The Bronchos will play another three-game MIAA road series next weekend at Emporia State. UCO welcomes Pittsburg State to Edmond March 7-9 for its first MIAA home series of the season.
