Bronchos Take The Lead In Houston

Baylor Bostick and Nick Canales Are Tied For Second In Individual Race

HUMBLE, Texas – Central Oklahoma used a second-round surge to take over the team lead after first day play in the Houston Classic Monday.

The Bronchos trailed Harding by three shots following a morning 289 before riding a birdie blitz to an eight-under 280 in the afternoon. UCO finished two trips around the 6,927-yard, par-72 Golf Club of Houston with a seven-under 569 total.

That's good for a nine-shot lead over Harding heading into Tuesday's final round. West Texas A&M is third in the 16-team tournament at 581, followed by Oklahoma Christian (587) and Arkansas Tech (589).

Baylor Bostick and Nick Canales both finished at four-under 140 in leading UCO. The sophomore standouts are tied for second in the individual standings, two shots behind leader Seth Bearden of Midwestern State.

"We played well today, especially for it being the first tournament of the spring," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "The guys made a lot of birdies and we kept our mistakes to a minimum, but there's a lot of golf left."

Bostick bounced back from an opening-round 74 with a six-under 66 in finishing at 140 and Canales had the same total after shooting 67-73.

Bennett Baldwin is tied for 13th at even-par 144 after rounds of 75-69, while Dylan Henderson shot 75-72 and Jordan Wilson 73-76. Rhett Hughes shot 72-76 competing as an individual.

Bostick made four bogeys against two birdies in a morning 74 before bouncing back in impressive fashion. He carded seven birdies – including three in a row during one stretch – against a lone bogey in coming back with the second-round 66.

Canales got off to a hot start, making six birdies before bogeying his next-to-last hole in opening with a 67. He had an up-and-down afternoon round, offsetting four birdies with five bogeys for a 73.
