Matthew Willenborg Named MIAA Player of the Week

Central Oklahoma Junior Averaged 24.5 Points, 10.0 Rebounds, 3.5 Blocks Per Game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Central Oklahoma junior forward Matthew Willenborg was named MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week, the league announced Monday.
 
Willenborg led Central Oklahoma to a pair of wins before and after Thanksgiving that helped the Bronchos improve to 6-3 this season.
 
From Norman, Oklahoma, Willenborg averaged 24.5 points per game, 10.0 rebounds per game, and 3.5 blocks per game this week. UCO beat UNT Dallas 81-67 on Monday night and Champion Christian College 107-46 on Sunday afternoon.
 
Willenborg also shot 58.8 percent from the floor, making 20 of 34 shots. He went 3-for-6 from behind the arc for a 50.0 percent rate, and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line, making 6 of 7 from the stripe. Willenborg added three assists and three steals in the two games.
 
On Monday night against UNT Dallas, Willenborg scored 23 points on 9 of 18 shooting and he pulled down nine rebounds to go with two blocks and two steals. He was 4-for-4 at the free-throw line in the game.
 
On Sunday afternoon against Champion Christian College, Willenborg matched a career-high 26 points to go with 11 rebounds, and five blocked shots. He was 11-for-16 from the floor including a 2-for-2 mark from behind the 3-point line.
 
Willenborg is averaging 15.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game this season. He is shooting 56.1 percent overall and 40.0 percent from three with a 72.2 percent mark from the free-throw line.
 
Willenborg's 18 blocks this season rank third in the country, his three double-doubles rank 13th nationally, and his 60 made field goals through one month of play this season are the second most of any player in Division II. He also ranks eighth nationally in rebounds with 71 this season.
 
Central Oklahoma begins MIAA play this week. The Bronchos travel to Pittsburg State on Thursday and will play at Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon. UCO continues a five-game road swing at Rogers State next week and will play two Top 25 teams (No. 13 St. Mary's and No. 14 St. Edward's) in San Antonio later this month before returning home December 30 against Dallas Christian.
