Central Tabbed Third, Fifth In MIAA Hoops Polls

Bronchos Open Season On Halloween In Canada

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Central Oklahoma was picked third in the MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll and fifth the league's media poll, announced Monday at Media Day presented by Seigfreid Bingham.

UCO received 137 points in the poll of 14 league head coaches. Washburn was picked first and received 13 first-place votes. Rogers State is second and received the other first-place vote. Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State are fourth and fifth behind the Bronchos.

"We appreciate the respect we're getting, but we've got a lot of work to do to get ready for this season," seventh-year UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We do have a lot of guys back and we think they're going to help us, but we've got a lot of new guys too and we have to get on the same page and be ready to go really soon."

Hoffman begins his seventh season with the Bronchos and has a 113-66 record through six campaigns. He has the fourth most wins among Central head men's basketball coaches, guided the team to the 2022 MIAA title, and back-to-back trips to the NCAA tournament in 2022 & 2023.

Central Oklahoma returns 10 players from last year's squad that was one shot away from another MIAA title and a third trip to the national tournament in four years.

Seniors Jacobi Sebock, JV Seat, and Ben Averitt return. Juniors Connor Newton, Matthew Willenborg, Parker Hannah, and Jarreth Ingram are all back. And sophomores Chase Sucharda, Jack Robinson, and Trey Tuck return too.

Sebock earned All-MIAA honors last year. He and Seat started all 32 games last season and the duo combined to average 27.0 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Sebocks' 7.7 boards led the MIAA and Seat's 59 made 3-pointers were a team-high for the Bronchos.

Hannah and Willenborg also played in all 32 games. Hannah was third on the team with 40 made 3-pointers and Willenborg's missed buzzer beater in the MIAA Championship game was the difference in 72-71 title game showdown with Fort Hays State.

Senior transfer Josh Nwankwo comes to UCO from Central Missouri. Junior transfers include Marcus Zeigler Jr. and Jayden Garces. Sophomore Sebastian Perry is another newcomer. Carter Roman Nose, Noah Eckels, Levi Kelly, Brady Hancuff, and Hudson Greer are all freshmen.

UCO opens the season later this month when the Bronchos head to British Columbia for the D2CCA Tipoff Classic hosted by Simon Fraser. Central Oklahoma plays SFU on Halloween and will also play Central and Western Washington Nov. 1-2 to wrap up the trip.

Central Oklahoma plays Minnesota Crookston and Arkansas Monticello in Tahlequah, Oklahoma as part of a Central Region Challenge Nov. 14-15. The Bronchos make their home debut Nov. 19 against Southwestern Oklahoma State. UCO will also play non-conference games against at West Texas and home against UNT Dallas and Champion Christian to wrap up the first month of the season.

The Bronchos begin MIAA play with three road games in December – at Pittsburg State, Missouri Southern, and Rogers State. The River City Classic in San Antonio pits Central Oklahoma against St. Mary's and St. Edward's Dec. 16-17. UCO wraps up non-conference play against Dallas Christian Dec. 30 in Edmond.

Central Oklahoma has 16 MIAA games in the second semester.
