Bronchos Tame Lions

EDMOND (Sept. 30) – Jenna Karp continued her dominating play at the net to propel Central Oklahoma past Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Missouri Southern Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 20-ranked Bronchos bounced back from a 29-27 first-set loss to top the Lions 25-21, 25-13, 25-17 in the next three, improving to 14-3 on the season and 5-2 in league play.

Karp was the catalyst.

The junior middle blocker hit a sizzling .485, knocking down a season-high 18 kills with just two errors in 33 attacks to go along with five blocks (two solo, three assisted) and two service aces. Karp has hit .470 with 62 kills and only eight miscues in 115 attacks in the last four matches.

"Jenna has played well all season, but she's really picked it up the last couple of weeks," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "She gave us a big lift tonight and we also had a bunch of other players come through to help us pull out with a good win over a tough team."

Addison Wimmer, Sydney Huck and Mallorie Koehn also had double-digit kills for UCO. Wimmer hit .375 with 15 kills in 32 attempts with three errors, while Huck had 12 kills and 14 digs and Koehn 11 kills.

Lindsey Houran directed the offense once again, dishing out 53 assists while adding 12 digs, three kills and a block. Jaedynn Evans (22 digs) and Kaitlyn Parrott (12) paced the back row defense.

There were 15 ties and nine lead changes in a dramatic first-set battle that saw the Bronchos overcome a 21-16 deficit to tie it at 22-all. UCO led 27-26 after Koehn and Karp teamed up for a block, but the Lions got two straight kills to pull out the tight win.

Central trailed again most of the second set before rallying to even the match. Mikiah Perdue's kill put the Bronchos on top to stay at 19-18, with kills by Karp and Huck helping finish off the win.

UCO never trailed in the third set, with Wimmer collecting six kills in nine tries to lead the way. It was a 16-12 lead when the Bronchos took control, ending the set with a 9-1 run.

Koehn started the spurt with a shot down the middle, then was on serve for seven straight points that made it 24-12 as Wimmer had three kills. MSSU stayed alive, briefly, before Wimmer hammered down another shot to cap the lopsided win.

The Lions led 10-7 in the fourth set before UCO ripped off six unanswered points to surge in front 13-10 as Karp had a kill and an ace. It was an 18-16 advantage when the Bronchos went on a 7-1 run to end it, with Karp and Wimmer combining for a block on match point.

UCO continues its four-match homestand Thursday, taking on Washburn at 6 p.m.
