Late Rally Lifts Bronchos Past Washburn

EDMOND (Oct. 5) – Sydney Huck sparked a 5-0 run that gave Central Oklahoma a dramatic fourth-set win and lifted the No. 22-ranked Bronchos past No. 19 Washburn Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

Washburn was on the verge of tying the match while serving with a 24-21 lead in the fourth set, but UCO had other plans.

Huck gave the Bronchos life with a kill at the net, followed with a service ace and Jenna Karp smacked down a shot at the net to tie it at 24-all. An error gave UCO its first lead of the set, then Karp and Mallorie Koehn capped the comeback with an emphatic block.

It added up to a 25-19, 28-26, 20-25, 26-24 victory for the Bronchos, who improved to 15-3 overall and 6-2 in the league. UCO is back in action Friday, hosting Emporia State at 6 p.m.

"That was a big-time win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Washburn has a great team and it was a battle all the way. We were fighting from behind the whole fourth set, but made a lot of huge plays down the stretch. The girls just kept competing."

Addison Wimmer led the offense, knocking down 17 kills with just two errors in 35 attacks in hitting .429. Huck added 14 kills, 12 digs and two aces, while Karp chipped in 10 kills and four assisted blocks.

Koehn (nine kills, three blocks) and Mikiah Perdue (eight kills, four blocks) also had key performances for UCO, which overcame a season-high 14 service errors. Lindsey Houran doled out 56 assists to go along with 10 digs and three kills.

The Bronchos also got another sensational defensive performance from libero Jaedynn Evans, who had a season-high 37 digs. She thwarted countless Washburn attacks with acrobatic saves that UCO turned into points of its own.

There were 11 ties and seven lead chances in the first set alone, with Central moving in front to stay at 16-15 on Koehn's ace. It was 20-16 after a Wimmer kill, with three WU errors and kills by Perdue and Koehn enabling the Bronchos to close it out.

The Ichabods led most of the way in the second set, but UCO continued battling and overcame a 22-19 deficit with a late rally. Back-to-back kills by Perdue and Huck got things going, then Huck and Karp teamed up for a block to tie it at 22.

Washburn had two chances to take the set, serving with 24-23 and 26-25 leads, but Karp slammed down kills at the net both times to keep the Bronchos alive. Perdue and Houran combined for a block to give UCO a 27-26 lead before Perdue's hard smash ended it.

The Ichabods came back to take the third set and led all the way in the fourth until UCO pulled off its late magic.
