Bronchos Drop Five-Set Thriller To Central Missouri

BOX SCORE

EDMOND (Sept. 29) –
A back-and-forth battle tilted the wrong direction for Central Oklahoma Friday night at Hamilton Field House as the No. 20-ranked Bronchos dropped a tough five-set slugfest to Central Missouri.

UCO won the first set 25-17 before the Jennies rebounded to take the next two (25-17, 25-22). The Bronchos came back with a 25-15 rout to square the match, but UCM prevailed 22-20 in a fifth-set thriller to claim the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association showdown.

"It was a tough, tough match that obviously could have gone either way," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Both teams really played hard and gave it everything they had. I was proud of the way we hung in there to take it to a fifth set and we kept fighting, but just came up a little short.

"There's no time to hang our heads about it and we need to bounce back strong tomorrow."

The Bronchos, who fell to 13-3 on the season and 4-2 in league play with the loss, return to their home court at 6 p.m. Saturday to take on Missouri Southern.

Jenna Karp had another stellar outing to lead the offense, hitting .471 with 17 kills and just one error in 34 attacks while adding four service aces and a solo block. It's the third straight match the junior standout has hit .444 or better.

Sydney Huck and Addison Wimmer had 14 kills apiece and Mikiah Perdue chipped in 12 along with four blocks (one solo, three assisted). Lindsey Houran handed out a season-high 60 assists along with 10 digs and two kills, while Jaedynn Evans made a season-best 29 digs.

UCO never trailed in the first set, taking control early on back-to-back Wimmer kills and another by Perdue. It was a 14-5 cushion following another Wimmer shot and the lead peaked at 10 (22-12) on Houran's dump at the net.

Central Missouri scored four straight points to stay alive, but Karp drilled a shot down the middle and followed with an ace as the Bronchos went on to close it out.

The Jennies overcame an early 4-1 deficit to even the match with their second-set win and then held off a late UCO charge in the third to put the Bronchos on the ropes.

Central responded in emphatic fashion.

Karp had a solo block and Lary Migliorino a kill as the Bronchos jumped out to a 4-1 lead and Huck's deep drive down the middle made it 10-5. The lead was 12-9 when UCO used a 6-1 run to put it away, with Karp knocking down four kills in that stretch.

That made it 18-10 and UCM had no answer.

The Bronchos battled from behind throughout the fifth set, but never let up. UCM led 14-11 and was serving for the match when Wimmer's rocket down the middle kept UCO alive.

Huck followed with a kill and an attack error tied it at 14, setting up the tense finish. Karp had three kills and Perdue two as the Bronchos pulled even at 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 before the Jennies scored the final two points on a kill and block to secure the win.
