No. 21 Central Oklahoma Shuts Down Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. – No. 21 Central Oklahoma beat Fort Hays State 3-0 Friday night, getting right back in the win column and doing so in convincing fashion.

The Bronchos won 25-19 in both the first and second sets before breaking down the Tigers 25-12 in the final set. Jenna Karp (13) and Addison Wimmer (10) led UCO's attack, with Riley Roberts dishing out 34 assists on 45 Broncho kills. Jaedynn Evans led the defensive efforts with 24 digs.

"We did a good job of refocusing," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We played well as a team, we had a lot of different people play well tonight and that was good to see."

Central Oklahoma improved to 12-2 on the season and 3-1 in the MIAA with Friday's win.

Karp had a game-high 13 kills on 21 attempts, hitting a stout .476 for the night. She also had five digs and a block. Karp, a junior from Spring, Texas, has her MIAA-leading hitting percentage up to .397 after Friday night.

Wimmer put down 11 kills and added a solo block and two block-assists. Mallorie Koehn added eight kills, Sydney Huck had five, Mikiah Perdue added four, and Roberts had three herself. Lari Migliorino chipped in with one kill too.

Evans' 24 digs, eight per set, helped the Broncho defense that had 70 digs in the match. Huck added 14 digs while Kaitlyn Parrott had 10 in a start for the freshman defensive specialist. Perdue had a block and three block-assists.

UCO spent most of the first set in a tight battle with Fort Hays State. There were six ties and three lead changes. Koehn broke the last tie, 13-13, with one of her early kills. That sparked an 8-3 run that included four kills from Karp. Central pulled away to a to a 25-19 first-set win from there.

The second set had a lot of similarities to the first and the breakaway happened at almost the same time too. Roberts broke a 14-14 tie and Wimmer pushed it to 16-14 before three-straight attack errors by Fort Hays State gave the Bronchos a 19-14 lead. After eight ties and two lead changes, UCO pulled away to another 25-19 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set had little drama. An 8-0 run turned a 3-2 score into UCO's rout in the final frame. The Bronchos had 16 kills and hit .324 as they put away Fort Hays State 25-12 to finish off the sweep.

UCO wraps up a short, three-game road trip Tuesday with an MIAA midweek matchup at Pittsburg State. The Bronchos beat PSU 3-0 last week in Edmond.
