Bronchos Force Game 3 At Pitt

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Jacob Bailey struck out seven batters in the final three innings to earn a win and keep Central Oklahoma's season alive for at least one more day with a 10-9 victory at Pittsburg State.

UCO evened the MIAA Baseball Championship first round best-of-three series 1-1 with the win. Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at noon.

"Just never give up," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We jumped on them early and they came right back. That was a great battle. We found a way. I'm proud of the guys for just never giving up. We need it one more time tomorrow."

UCO scored six runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. But it was 6-6 heading to the fourth inning. A run in the top of the seventh for the Bronchos tied the game again, 7-7, then UCO took a 10-7 lead in the eighth. After Pitt scored two off Bailey in the bottom of the eighth, it came down to a tense ninth inning.

Bailey gave up a leadoff single to put the game-winning and series-clinching run at the plate. But a strikeout followed, then Bailey picked up the runner at first before striking out the final batter on a full count pitch to give UCO the win.

Bailey earned a win, throwing three innings. He gave up two runs on three hits and a walk, but struck out a season-high seven batters on the day.

Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos and threw 2 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on five hits and two walks. He did have four strikeouts. Valek Cisneros threw 3 1/3 and struck out five batters. He gave up just one run on five hits and three walks.

The Bronchos scored 10 runs but did so on just six hits. Wyatt Gray went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Cameron Uselton had two RBIs on a 1-for-4 day. Kaleb Glass, Jaden Parsons, and Austin Lambert all had one hit as well.

UCO took an early lead thanks to a big third inning. Glass drew a two-out walk and then stole second before Noah Olson drew a walk. After Parsons walked too, Uselton hit a two-RBI single to left to give the Bronchos a 2-0 lead.

Seth Gray was hit by a pitch after that and the bases were loaded again before Wyatt drew an RBI walk to make it 3-0. Then Lambert reached on a fielding error by the Pitt third baseman, with Uselton and Seth scoring to make it 5-0. UCO made it 6-0 when Aiden Proctor drew his second walk of the inning and Wyatt scored.

Pitt State walked seven batters and hit another in the third inning, with Central scoring six runs on that and one hit.

In the seventh, Wyatt led off with a single and Lambert doubled to right after that. Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice after a PSU pitching change, and Wyatt scored on a throwing error to make it 7-7.

Parsons led off the eighth reaching on another Pitt error, and after Seth was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, Wyatt drilled a three-run home run to center field to give UCO the 10-7 lead.

The winner-take-all Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m. The advancing team heads to Warrensburg, Missouri for the MIAA Baseball Championship's four-team double-elimination finals next weekend.
