Bronchos Fall To Bearcats

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma narrowly missed leveling the series with Northwest Missouri Saturday afternoon and took a 5-4 setback in the MIAA matchup at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos (27-13, 15-11 MIAA) will now look to Game 3 Sunday at 1 p.m. to get one from Northwest Missouri (10-28, 8-18), which won their first series of the season with the win Saturday.

UCO dropped Game 1 9-3 on Friday night but came out with two runs in the first inning as the Bronchos looked to even the series. UCO led 3-1 after four innings and the game was tied, 4-4, heading to the ninth. But a close play at the plate gave Northwest the game-winning run in the top of the ninth and Central couldn't come up with an answer in the bottom of the ninth.

With runners on second and third and one out, a fly ball to left field was an easy out for the Bronchos. Cameron Uselton settled under it and made the catch. But the tagging runner on third created a dramatic finish. Uselton's throw and the tag from Wyatt Gray was less than a half-second too slow as Northwest's Caden Diel slid over home plate for the game-winning run.

Valek Cisneros was handed the loss. He gave up the one run, unearned, in one inning of work. The right-handed pitcher also struck out the next batter to end the inning. Diel drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second when Layne Shiers reached on an error at first base. A sac-bunt moved the runners to second and third and the sac-fly put the Bearcats in front.

Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos and threw five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out three in the game. Grant Zwald threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk. Jase Farmer threw 1/3 of an inning and gave up just one hit and a walk. Jacob Bailey also pitched in the game, throwing two innings and striking out four Bearcats.

UCO had eight hits in the game and all came from the first six batters in the lineup. Noah Olson and Jaden Parsons both had two hits while Aiden Proctor, Kaleb Glass, Uselton, and Seth Gray had one each.

Proctor led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk before he stole second base. He advanced to third on a flyout by Glass, then scored when Olson singled through the right side. Olson also stole second and then scored when Parsons singled through the right side and that gave the Bronchos a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Proctor kept with the theme, hitting a single through the right side with two outs in the fourth inning. He stole second again, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. He would score on another wild pitch to give UCO a 3-1 lead.

After Northwest managed to take a 4-3 lead in the game, Uselton drew a two-out walk in the seventh and Seth Gray's single to center scored him to tie the game, 4-4.

Proctor's two stolen bases on Saturday give the junior middle infielder from Manhattan, Kansas 33 stolen bases on the season. He moved into eighth place on Central's single season list and is eight back of the school record.

Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri will play Sunday at 1 p.m. in the series finale. The Bronchos will close the gates to Wendell Simmons Field following Tuesday night's non-conference game against Southwestern Oklahoma State. UCO plays its final seven games on the road over the final two weeks of April.
