Bronchos Downed In Series Opener

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma couldn't keep pace with Pittsburg State in a high-scoring affair Friday night at Wendell Simmons Field as the Bronchos dropped Game 1 of the three-game MIAA series 16-12.

UCO is 21-10 on the year following the loss and now 10-8 in the MIAA. Pittsburg State is 22-9 overall and 14-4 in league play.

Pitt State scored four runs in the top of the first inning on a three-base error that set the tone for the game that saw 28 total runs scored. With the bases loaded, PSU right fielder Karson Coffee singled up the middle to put the first run on the board, but an error by UCO center fielder Kaleb Glass allowed everyone to score and put the Bronchos in an early 4-0 deficit.

Pitt State made it 5-0 in the second, but UCO wasn't going to go away quietly on Friday night in Edmond.

The Bronchos got a three-run home run from Austin Lambert and a two-RBI single from Seth Gray to tie the game, 5-5, in the bottom of the second.

Pittsburg put up another big inning, scoring six in the third to take what seemed like a commanding 11-5 lead. Then UCO kept chipping away at it.

Wyatt Gray hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to make it 11-7. It was the first home run of the season for the junior catcher.

After PSU went up 12-7 in the fifth, Lambert was at it again with a two-RBI single through the left side that scored Cameron Uselton and Jaden Parsons and cut the lead to three runs, 12-9.

Pitt extended the lead again with a solo homer in the sixth to make it 13-9, but the Bronchos responded again.

Glass pelted a two-run home run to right field, scoring Noah Olson on the play, and cutting it to two. Then Lambert, again, singled to right field to score Uselton and make it 13-12.

Unfortunately for the Bronchos, a dozen runs was all they could muster. Pittsburg State added one in the seventh, then four in the ninth, to put the game away.

Lambert finished 3-for-5 with six RBIs, hitting the homer with two singles. Uselton went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and three runs scored. Olson went 2-for-5 and scored one run. Seth and Wyatt both had one hit, as did Glass, Parsons, and Orlando Gonzalez.

UCO struck out nine PSU batters in the game. James Wambold got the start and gave up 10 runs in 2 1/3 innings pitched. He allowed seven hits and two walks and struck out one. Only five of those 10 runs were earned.

Bradan Pierce threw 2 2/3 innings, Race Felter threw one, and Jase Farmer threw 1/3 of an inning, with each striking out one batter. Jacob Bailey threw two innings and was solid up until the ninth. He gave up four hits and two runs while striking out three batters. Brandon Gomez got the final two outs in the top of the ninth, including one strikeout, to end the game.

Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State will play Game 2 Saturday at 3 p.m. and then wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
