UCO Evens Series With Pitt State

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma beat Pittsburg State 10-6 Saturday afternoon to even the MIAA series heading into Sunday.

UCO improved to 22-10 overall on the season with the win. Pitt State is also 22-10. The Bronchos are now 11-8 in the MIAA while PSU is 14-5. Game 3 is Sunday at 1 p.m.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 3-0 lead, led 8-0 midway through, and 10-1 heading to the ninth before a late rally by the guests. Caleb Burchfield earned his first win in a Broncho uniform with a dominant 5 2/3 innings of work.

Just a couple weeks since moving into a starting role, the junior right-hander threw a season-high 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits and a walk. Burchfield had four strikeouts in the game. All of this against a Pitt State team that averages 10 runs per game and put up 16 on the Bronchos Friday night.

Central Oklahoma got three runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a pair of leadoff hits. Jaden Parsons singled and Cameron Uselton followed with a ground-rule double down the left field line. Wyatt Gray scored Parsons with a sacrifice fly, then Uselton scored on a throwing error by the PSU shortstop to make it 2-0.

Landen Wood reached on a fielder's choice when Pitt's throw went awry, then advanced to second on the error. He scored from second on the next play on Shae Morrison's hard hit ground ball to first.

Wood led off the bottom of the fifth with a bunt single and Morrison scored him for the second time with an RBI triple to center field. Orlando Gonzalez pelted an RBI double after that and UCO had a 5-0 lead with nobody out in the fifth.

Kaleb Glass grounded out to move Gonzalez to third, then Seth Gray hit a single to center to score Gonzalez. After a pitching change, Noah Olson was up and he drilled a pitch out of the ballpark in center field to give UCO an 8-0 lead in the game.

Pittsburg State got one back in the sixth, but UCO added to its lead in the eighth.

Glass led off the inning with a single to center field, then stole second without hesitation on the next pitch to Seth Gray. Gray then squared up another single to center and Glass scored from second to give UCO a 9-1 lead. After a wild pitch got Seth Gray to second, a pair of groundouts moved him to third and then home for the 10-1 lead.

Jeb Jenkins replaced Burchfield in the top of the sixth inning and got the final out there. He made it through the seventh and eighth innings without allowing a hit, but a pair of leadoff walks to start the ninth prompted another pitching change.

Aiden Bagwell came on and an error by Seth Gray allowed Pitt to load the bases. Bagwell finished the inning, but gave up three runs (plus two charged to Jenkins) on two hits and a sacrifice fly.

Central Oklahoma scattered 13 hits in the game and scored 10 runs for the fifth straight game. Seth Gray led the way with three hits – all singles. Parsons and Uselton both had two-hit games.

Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State will play Game 3 Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bronchos are scheduled to visit Oklahoma Christian in Oklahoma City on Tuesday for a midweek non-conference matchup before hosting Washburn next weekend for another three-game MIAA series that will begin Thursday due to Easter.
