UCO Falls in Series Finale

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma's offensive woes continued Sunday as the Bronchos dropped a narrow 2-0 decision to Fort Hays State.

UCO fell to 17-8 overall with the loss and the Bronchos are now 7-6 in the MIAA. This weekend marked the first series loss to Fort Hays for Central since the 2016 season.

"Our offense just could not get it going this weekend," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We had our chances, we had plenty of them, but we couldn't get a hit when we needed it."

UCO's pitching efforts Sunday were solid. The Bronchos and the Tigers went to the sixth inning in a scoreless tie. By the day's end, Central only allowed five hits.

One of those came in the sixth to score the go-ahead run for Hays. After a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt, Hays outfielder Ed Scott hit an RBI double to make it 1-0.

UCO thought maybe Scott didn't touch first and after the play, Broncho pitcher Jeb Jenkins through the ball over to first to appeal, but unfortunately, his toss sailed high over Austin Lambert's glove and Scott scored from second on the error to make it 2-0.

That was it for the day.

Central Oklahoma left one on base in the first and second innings, two on base in the fourth, and one again in the fifth and sixth innings. The Bronchos left two on in the seventh, and left the bases loaded in the ninth for a total of 11 left on base in the game.

UCO scattered seven hits in the game. Seth Gray went 2-for-3 with a double. Jaden Parsons, Noah Olson, Orlando Gonzalez, Wyatt Gray, and Landen Wood all had singles in the game.

Aiden Bagwell got the start for UCO on Sunday and was solid. He threw four innings, allowed only two hits, and no runs or walks. He struck out four Hays batters too. Jenkins followed and was really good in the fifth inning, but his brief slip-up in the sixth proved costly.

Jacob Bailey threw one inning and only allowed one hit. Valek Cisneros threw two innings and also allowed just one hit. He struck out three over the two innings.

Central Oklahoma will visit Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday afternoon for a midweek non-conference game in Shawnee, Oklahoma. UCO is on the road next weekend for MIAA play with a three-game series at Newman in Wichita, Kansas.
