UCO Opens Series With Win

EDMOND – Noah Olson hit a pair of two-run home runs to spark an 11-4 MIAA series-opening win for Central Oklahoma Friday evening at Wendell Simmons Field against Fort Hays State.

An 11-strikeout day for the UCO pitching staff bolstered the offensive onslaught. Central Oklahoma improved to 17-6 overall on the season with the win and the Bronchos are now 7-4 in MIAA play. Fort Hays State is now 9-16, 2-9 on the year. Game 2 is Saturday at 3 p.m.

Olson hit a blast to right field in the bottom of the third inning to cut a 4-1 deficit to one run. He did it again in the bottom of the fifth and gave UCO a 5-4 lead in the game. The Bronchos never looked back.

Jaden Parsons went 4-for-5 from the UCO leadoff spot, scoring four runs after hitting three singles and an RBI double. Cameron Uselton went 1-for-3 with two-RBIs and a double. Olson finished 2-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs. And Austin Lambert added a 1-for-4 line with two RBIs. That first four in the UCO lineup combined to go 8-for-16 with nine RBIs.

Orlando Gonzalez, Trevor Stevens, Wyatt Gray, and Landen Wood all had one hit with Gonzalez and Wood scoring a run. Gray, who caught the 11-strikeout game by the Broncho pitching staff, had an RBI and scored twice.

James Wambold got the start for the Bronchos and exited in the top of the fourth down 4-3. He ended the day with the no decision. He struck out three and allowed seven hits.

Grant Zwald came on in relief and got a lineout to get out of a jam in the top of the fourth. He then struck out seven Fort Hays State batters over a 3 1/3 inning outing where he didn't allow a run. Zwald did give up two hits and two walks, but kept Hays off the scoreboard.

Jacob Bailey threw a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth and Jace Farmer, minus a hit batter, got UCO through the ninth for the win.

UCO scored first Friday. After Parsons led off the bottom of the first with a single, he moved to second and third on groundouts before Lambert singled to center to score Parsons and give UCO the 1-0 lead.

Olson made it 4-3 in the third with his first two-run home run, then gave UCO the 5-4 lead in the fifth with his second homer. The Bronchos scored three runs in both the seventh and eighth to polish off the win.

Uselton's sacrifice fly scored Gray, whose leadoff single was followed by back-to-back bunt singles from Wood and Parsons. That made it 6-4. Lambert's groundout to third scored Wood to make it 7-4. And Parsons scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-4.

In the eighth, Gray singled to right to score Gonzalez and give UCO a 9-4, then Parsons and Uselton hit back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 10-, then 11-4.

The schools will wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
