Bronchos Top SNU

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma postponed its midweek game with Southern Nazarene twice this week, but the Bronchos still came out swinging Thursday afternoon when the game finally began.

UCO 7, SNU 4.

A big second inning was padded by an extra run in the fifth, and a strong finish followed as Central Oklahoma improved to 4-0 on the season. UCO now begins a four-game series with the University of Mary, which arrived from Bismarck, North Dakota Thursday night. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon, and the fourth game is set for Sunday at noon.

"We didn't play well today, but we still got a win and that's what's important," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We weren't good on the bases, but we did enough. And our pitching was strong enough to get us through."

While UCO did steal six bases in the game Thursday afternoon, the Bronchos were also caught stealing twice and got picked off once.

An rally in the bottom of the first got UCO out in front early.

Shae Morrison hit a two-out single to center field that scored Jaden Parsons, who had been hit by a pitch on the first pitch of the inning, and Seth Gray, who drew a one-out walk. After Orlando Gonzalez singled on a two-out bunt, Austin Lambert doubled down the left field line to score Morrison and Gonzalez and give the Bronchos a 4-0 lead.

UCO added one more in the second. Kaleb Glass singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a Parsons bunt single, and then to third on a sacrifice bunt from Noah Olson. Gray then reached on a fielding error by the SNU first baseman and Glass scored to make it 5-0.

While Southern Nazarene kept it interesting with a big, four-run third inning, UCO added two late runs to put the game away. Cameron Uselton doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a Morrison groundout to first to give UCO a 6-4 lead.

Olson added another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. He led off the inning getting dinged by a 2-1 pitch and Gray followed with a triple to left field. Olson scored to make it the final, 7-4.

Glass, Parsons, and Orlando Gonzalez all recorded two hits on the day. Gray, Uselton, Morrison, Lambert and Aiden Proctor all had one hit each to give the Bronchos 11 for the game.

Race Felter got the start for UCO and was credited with all four earned runs after 2 1/3 innings of work. He did strike out three batters while on the mound. He walked two and gave up two hits. Jacob Savage relieved Felter in the third after a two-RBI single made it 5-2. Savage was then relieved himself without recording an out after giving up one hit, an RBI single that made it 5-3. He also walked in a run that made it 5-4.

Jeb Jenkins followed Savage and threw 3 2/3 innings for the Bronchos. He struck out five in his relief effort and allowed just one hit and one walk. Jenkins was awarded the win – his first as a Broncho.

Aiden Bagwell threw one shutout inning in the seventh and Jacob Bailey earned a save, throwing two shutout innings without allowing a hit or a run. He struck out three batters as part of the final six outs.

Central Oklahoma will host Mary this weekend. The Marauders from North Dakota are playing for the first time in 2023. They were picked fourth in the NSIC preseason coaches' poll.
