Bronchos Drop Opener Against Mary

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma got in a hole early and never recovered in a 10-4 loss to the University of Mary (N.D.) Friday afternoon.

UCO and Mary are scheduled to play four games this weekend. A doubleheader is on tap for Saturday beginning at noon.

Mary, playing its first game of the season, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then added three more in the top of the second after a 1-2-3 put down of the Bronchos in the bottom of the first. The 6-0 deficit set the tone for the day.

James Wambold (1-1) got the start for the Bronchos and gave up six runs on six hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings of work. He did strikeout one batter in the first.

Caleb Burchfield came on in relief of Wambold in the second. He threw 2 2/3 and gave up five hits in relief. He got UCO out of the third without a run allowed, then the Bronchos made their first push back into the game.

Aiden Proctor hit an infield single to score Wyatt Gray. Jaden Parsons followed with another single that scored Austin Lambert. Then Proctor scored on a delayed steal as Parsons held up the defense and the Bronchos cut the deficit to 6-3.

Mary got one more back off Burchfield in the fourth, then the game settled in for more of a pitcher's battle. UCO got that one back in the bottom of the seventh when Parsons scored Proctor on an RBI groundout. That made it 7-4.

Unfortunately for the Bronchos, Mary put the game away in the eighth with another 3-run rally to push the score to the final, 10-4.

Brandon Gomez relieved Burchfield and threw the fifth, sixth and seventh, holding Mary scoreless on one hit. He struck out four over his three innings of work. Caleb Ebert started the eighth but was replaced with Jacob Savage after walking the leadoff. Savage game up two runs on two hits, and another that was Ebert's responsibility.

Grant Zwald finished off the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, but UCO couldn't rally in the bottom of the ninth.
