Bronchos Sweep First MIAA Opponent

EDMOND – No. 13 Central Oklahoma swept the season series with Missouri Western following a pair of wins Saturday at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos won 13-8 in the first game of the MIAA doubleheader before taking a 9-8 victory in the second game.

UCO improved to 11-2 on the season following the sweep. The Bronchos are 3-0 in MIAA play.

"We didn't pitch very well today but the offense did a good job of giving them more help than they needed," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "I think we can be better on the mound, but I was glad the team responded and had each other's back the way they did. Our goal is to win every series and getting the sweep is always better."

Central Oklahoma beat Missouri Western 8-4 on Thursday in the first game of the series. After a weather induced off-day Friday, the Bronchos came back with two more wins to earn the sweep.

UCO jumped out to a big lead in Saturday's first game – Game 2 of the series – and despite a late rally by Missouri Western, the Bronchos held on for the win.

Central got a 2-RBI double from Cameron Uselton and Noah Olson in the bottom of the first inning and Austin Lambert followed those with an RBI single. UCO led 5-1.

The Bronchos led 7-2 in the fourth when Jaden Parsons knocked an RBI single and Uselton hit a sacrifice fly to left. Lambert made it 8-2 with an RBI double in the fifth. Uselton added to the lead again with solo home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth to give UCO a 9-4 lead.

After MWSU cut it to one run, 9-8, in the top of the seventh, UCO closed it out with a big rally in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Kaleb Glass scored on a throwing error by the MWSU first baseman, then Uselton had an RBI double to left to score Jaden Parsons. Seth Gray followed with a two-run home run to give UCO a 13-8 lead.

Central Oklahoma scattered 13 hits in the first game. The first seven batters in the lineup all recorded a hit. The top three batters in the lineup combined to go 7-for-11 to aid the effort.

Chris Spry picked up the win on the mound for the Bronchos, throwing six innings and giving up four runs – three earned – on four hits and five walks. He did strike out six MWSU batters. Grant Zwald gave up two runs on two walks and Aiden Bagwell gave up two more on three hits as neither pitcher recorded an out. Jeb Jenkins then came in and threw the final three innings, allowing only one hit and striking out three to earn a save.

In the afternoon game, a similar pattern followed. Missouri Western scored in the top of the first again but put up four runs this time to take an early lead. The guests made it 5-0 in the top of the second. Then UCO got it going.

Orlando Gonzalez tripled to left center and scored Olson before Lambert doubled to score Gonzalez and make it 5-2. UCO made it 5-3 in the third when Gray tripled to score Uselton. The Bronchos got back-to-back bases loaded free bases to tie the game in the fifth. Gray walked and his twin brother Wyatt scored. Then Olson was hit by a pitch and Parsons scored to tie the game.

UCO took a 6-5 lead on another bases loaded freebie. Landen Wood drew a pinch-hit walk and Olson scored in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wyatt  Gray then reached on a two-out throwing error and Gonzalez scored to make it 7-5.

Olson belted a two-RBI single through the right side in the eighth to give UCO what it thought to be a comfortable 9-5 lead.

In the top of the ninth though, Missouri Western made it tough. The guests had a two-RBI triple and an RBI single to cut the lead to one run before UCO ended it with a 9-8 victory.

The Bronchos had eight hits in the second game with five of those coming from the middle of the lineup.

Marcos Lopez got the start for the Bronchos and gave up five runs on five hits and two walks in three innings of work. He did strikeout four in the start. Caleb Burchfield threw three innings of relief work and struck out two in his appearance. He gave up only two hits. Valek Cisneros was credited with the win. He threw 1 1/3 innings and didn't allow a baserunner while striking out two batters. Jacob Bailey threw the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks.

Central Oklahoma has a midweek game against Oklahoma Christian on tap for Tuesday at 5 p.m. before making its first true road trip of the season next weekend. The Bronchos have played one road game, a single midweek non-conference game at Southern Nazarene earlier this week. UCO will play at Rogers State next weekend, taking on the Hillcats for a three-game MIAA series Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
