UCO Opens Spring Season Monday

The Central Oklahoma men's golf team resumes the 2022-23 season this week when the Bronchos journey to Houston, Texas for the Houston Classic.

First-round action in the 17-team tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. at the 6,945-yard, par-72 Golf Club of Houston, with the final 18 holes set for an 8 a.m. start on Tuesday.

It's the first of five spring tournaments for UCO, which had top-six finishes in four of five fall events.

"We're excited about getting started," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "The weather hasn't cooperated much the last couple of weeks and we've had to do a lot of inside work, but the guys have prepared as well as they could.

"It's a great opening tournament for us on a really good course. We had a pretty good fall and I'm excited to see what we can do this spring."

Making up UCO's five-man unit will be senior Kyle Hickey, juniors Caleb Kimmel and Ross Taylor and sophomores Bennett Baldwin and Dylan Henderson. Junior Evan Griffith will compete as an individual medalist.

Baldwin led the Bronchos in the fall with top-20 finishes in three of five events, including a runner-up showing, and ended with a 74.08 scoring average.

Kimmel carded a 74.38 average with three top-20 placings in five meets, Taylor was at 74.9 with top 20s in two of four tournaments and Griffith was at 75.77 in five outings with a pair of top-20 finishes.

Hickey and Henderson didn't compete in any fall tournament.
