Frantic Finish Propels Bronchos Past Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 3) – Mallorie Koehn had two kills and a service ace in a 6-1 run to end the fifth set that catapulted Central Oklahoma to an amazing come-from-behind win over Washburn in a classic Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association slugfest Friday night.

The No. 17-ranked Bronchos prevailed 25-20, 16-25, 26-24, 18-25, 16-14 in the two and one-half hour battle, overcoming a 13-10 deficit in the decisive set with the clutch closing sequence. UCO improved to 23-4 on the season and 14-3 in league play in completing a season sweep of the Ichabods (14-10, 8-9).

"Our girls just refused to quit," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We kept battling and made a lot of big plays at the end to pull out a great win. It was a tough, tough match and both teams really played their hearts out."

The Bronchos never led in the fifth set until the fantastic finish.

Washburn was poised for the win after going ahead 13-10, but Koehn kept UCO alive with a kill and Sydney Huck followed with an ace. The Ichabods scored again to go up 14-12 and were serving for the match when Koehn came through with another kill.

Jenna Karp's solo block – one of three she had in the final set – tied it at 14-all, Koehn's ace put the Bronchos on top and an attack error handed UCO the win.

Five players had double-digit kills for the Bronchos. Koehn led the way with 15, while Addison Wimmer added 13, Karp 12, Mikiah Perdue 11 and Huck 10. Lari Migliorino chipped in eight.

Karp also came up big at the net with 10 blocks (four solo, six assisted) and Wimmer added four (one solo, three assisted). Lindsey Houran handed out 58 assists directing the offense in addition to making 17 digs.

Jaedynn Evans had another huge defensive outing on the back row, digging up 37 WU attacks to tie a season high. Kaitlyn Parrott added 11 digs.

The Bronchos led all the way in the opening set, jumping on top 3-0 behind two Huck kills and a combo block by Karp and Koehn. The lead peaked at 13-7 after a Washburn error and it was still a five-point advantage at 18-13 on Houran's dump kill at the net.

The Ichabods got within 23-20 before UCO finished it off with back-to-back kills by Karp and Wimmer.

WU tied the match with its second-set win, then Perdue knocked down eight kills to spark the tough third-set victory. Her final kill of the set broke a 24-all tie and Koehn's kill ended it.

The Ichabods came back to take the fourth set, but UCO was up to the challenge.

The Bronchos move on to Emporia, Kan. Saturday for a 6 p.m. contest in the final road match of the regular season.
