Central Oklahoma Plays Two On The Road Friday & Saturday

LAWTON, Okla. – Central Oklahoma continues a season-opening road trip this weekend with a pair of non-conference games against Oklahoma foes.

Up first is Cameron, Friday at 5:30 p.m. from Aggie Gymnasium in Lawton. The Bronchos (0-2) look for their first win against Cameron (1-2). Central Oklahoma also plays at Southern Nazarene (3-0) in Bethany on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the home opener for the Crimson Storm.

"Even though we dropped our first two games this past weekend, we thought we played well and we had a chance to win both of them," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "We're disappointed we didn't get it done, but we're a team with a lot of new pieces and we have to work some things out."

Andrews is in her second season with Central Oklahoma. She spent the previous six seasons as head coach at Cameron. The Bronchos have a 15-game win streak over Cameron dating back to 2006, which is also the last time UCO started a season 0-2. Central leads the all-time series with Cameron, 48-30.

UCO opened the 2023-24 season last weekend at the Central Region Challenge in Tahlequah with losses to Mary (75-73, OT) and Northwestern Oklahoma State (68-60). Central Oklahoma is averaging 66.5 points per game after two games played. The Bronchos shot 37.6 percent from the floor last weekend, with a 34.1 percent rate from behind the 3-point line. UCO was 82.6 percent from the free-throw line.

The Bronchos averaged 38.5 rebounds per game and 15 assists per game, assisting on 30 of 50 made baskets last week. UCO also averaged 10.5 steals per game and forced 41 turnovers in two games.

Reagan Fox led Central in scoring in Week 1, averaging 17.0 points per game. The sophomore transfer from Abilene Christian, and a Blanchard, Oklahoma native, scored a team-high 21 points in the season opener and added 13 in the second game last weekend. She went 10-for-25 from the field overall but was 6-for-10 from behind the 3-point line. Fox was also 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.

Karly Wadsworth also averaged double figures last weekend, posting 10.5 points per game. She hit 8 of 19 total shots and 5 of 11 3-pointers. Wadsworth had 11 against Mary and 10 against Northwestern.

Alena Wilson was the third-leading scorer for Central Oklahoma this past weekend and was the leading rebounder for the Bronchos. Wilson, from Dallas, scored 7.0 points per game and pulled down 7.5 rebounds per game in her first two career games at UCO. The junior transfer, who played at Cameron last year, was 7-for-13 from the floor.

Aspen Williston (5.5), Talia Pogi (5.0) and Alexis Lewis (4.0) helped out in scoring. Aliyah Llanusa, Lexi Foreman, and Natalie Stice all averaged 3.5 points per game and Gracee Miller averaged three.

Llanusa led the team with eight assists and six steals. Miller had six assists and a pair of steals. Fox had five and five.

Cameron is off to a 1-2 start this season. The Aggies lost the opener at home last Friday to Adams State, 63-53. CU won the next night over UC-Colorado Springs, 74-64. And earlier this week, on a trip to Searcy, Arkansas, Cameron lost 67-46 at Harding.

Cameron is averaging 57.7 points per game and shooting 33.7 percent from the field. Shamica Smith leads the Aggies, scoring 22.0 points per game and pulling down 11.3 rebounds per game. Katie King also averages double figures at 10.0 points per game and is averaging 5.3 rebounds per game.

Southern Nazarene is 3-0 with a win over preseason No. 2 Minnesota State. The Crimson Storm also beat Minot State last weekend and Arkansas Fort Smith earlier this week. SNU averages 68.0 points per game. Lauryn Reither leads the team with 16.7 points per game, 5.0 steals per game, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. Emily Monaghan (13.0) and Abbie Jiles (12.7) also average double figures. Hannah Giddey averages 8.3 points and leads the team in rebounding at 11.3 boards per game.
