Bronchos Rally Past Missouri Western

EDMOND (Nov. 10) – Sydney Huck had seven of her 17 kills in a key third-set win that propelled No. 16-ranked Central Oklahoma past Missouri Western Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos dropped 25-20 decisions in the first two sets before Huck's heroics led to a 25-17 third-set rout. UCO tied it with a 25-18 win and overcame a 4-1 fifth-set deficit to claim a 15-12 victory to complete the comeback.

It was the fifth five-set win of the season for the Bronchos, who improved to 25-4 overall and 16-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with their 12th win in 13 outings. The Griffons fell to 19-19 and 12-7.

UCO completes the regular season Saturday, hosting Northwest Missouri at 3 p.m. for Senior Day. The Bronchos are tied for second in the league standings with Nebraska-Kearney and can earn a share of the MIAA title with a win over the Bearcats and a UNK victory over conference leader Central Missouri.

"We have a very resilient team and they just refused to lose tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Missouri Western has a really good team and we struggled with our offense the first two sets, but we made a few adjustments that helped us.

"We came out with a different mind-set in the third set and played pretty well the rest of the way. It was great win for us."

Huck had 15 of her 17 kills in the final three sets and added four assisted blocks. Mallorie Koehn also had 17 kills, while Addison Wimmer added 15 and Jenna Karp hit .480 with 13 kills to go along with two solo and two assisted blocks.

Lari Migliorino chipped in five kills and four assisted blocks, Lindsey Houran dished out 52 assists in addition to making 17 digs and defensive whiz Jaedynn Evans tied a season high with 37 digs. Katie Le added nine digs and made an amazing play to save a ball while running into the scorer's table that led to a big fourth-set point.

The Griffons put UCO on the ropes by taking the first two sets and then grabbed a 7-3 lead in the third in looking for a stunning sweep, but the never-say-die Bronchos were up to the challenge.

Houran's dump kill at the net ignited a 9-2 run that put UCO ahead to stay. Huck had three kills in that spurt and Migliorino's ace capped it, giving the Bronchos an 11-9 lead.

It was still a two-point advantage at 18-16 when UCO reeled off six straight points to put it away. Huck had three more kills, Koehn added two and Andrea Coady served up an ace as the Bronchos kept the match alive.

UCO kept the momentum going to open the fourth set, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead behind three Wimmer kills and a Karp slam at the net. MWSU never got closer than three the rest of the way as Karp and Huck finished with six kills apiece.

The Griffons went up 4-1 to open the fifth set, but Karp had a kill and a solo block in a 4-0 run that gave the Bronchos a 5-4 lead. It was tied 6-6 when UCO scored five unanswered points behind three MWSU errors, a Wimmer kill and Riley Roberts ace to surge ahead 11-6.

The Bronchos stayed in front the rest of the way and Migliorino completed the dramatic comeback with an emphatic smash at the net.

UCO is assured of being a top-three seed for the eight-team MIAA Tournament that will be held Nov. 16-18 in St. Joseph, Mo. The tournament champion earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national tournament.
