UCO Turns Back Hornets

EDMOND (Oct. 6) – What started out looking like a rout instead turned into a nail-biter, but Central Oklahoma righted the ship in the end and finished with a flourish in getting past pesky Emporia State Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 22-ranked Bronchos appeared on the verge of a sweep after taking the first two sets (25-16, 25-23), but the Hornets battled back to win the next two (25-23, 25-21). UCO seized control early in the deciding set and romped 15-4 to avoid the upset.

Central moved to 16-3 on the season and 7-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with the win.

"We had a little letdown after the first two sets and you can't do that in this conference," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Hats off to Emporia. They kept battling and took it to us in the third and fourth sets, but I liked the way we responded."

Mallorie Koehn paced a balanced offensive attack for the Bronchos, hitting .310 with 15 kills to go alone with four service aces and two blocks. Jenna Karp and Addison Wimmer had 12 kills apiece, while Mikiah Perdue added 11.

Karp (seven blocks) and Perdue (six) also came up big at the net for UCO. Riley Roberts (33 assists) and Lindsey Houran (20) split duties at setter and Jaedynn Evans had another stellar defensive outing with 28 digs.

The Bronchos trailed 8-6 in the first set before going on a 4-0 run to take the lead for good. Sydney Huck and Karp had kills while Karp and Koehn combined for a block in that stretch that made it 10-8 and UCO pulled away from there.

Karp's slam at the net gave the Bronchos a 21-16 lead in the second set, but ESU rallied to tie it at 23-all. Then Perdue took over, smashing down one shot in the middle and the set-winner off a block to give UCO a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Hornets came back to take the narrow third-set win and held off a late UCO rally in the fourth to tie the match and set up the decisive fifth set.

It was no contest.

Houran started it with a dump at the net and Huck followed with a drive down the line to make it 2-0 and the lead was 4-1 after Huck and Perdue teamed up for a block.

ESU never got any closer as the Bronchos continued to pour it on. Wimmer had two kills down the stretch and UCO ended the match when Houran and Karp combined for an emphatic block to complete the fifth-set rout.

The Bronchos hit the road next week for two MIAA matches, traveling to Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western.
