Koehn Sparks UCO Past Bearcats

MARYVILLE, Mo. (Oct. 13) – Mallorie Koehn knocked down 10 of her season-high 18 kills in the second set to spark No. 21-ranked Central Oklahoma to a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sweep of Northwest Missouri Friday night.

The Bronchos opened their two-night, two-match league road swing with a tough 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 victory, improving to 17-3 overall and 8-2 in the conference. UCO moves on to St. Joseph, Mo. Saturday to take on Missouri Western at 6 p.m.

"It was a hard match and I was proud of the way we handled ourselves tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We made some clutch players in key situations and came out with a great win against a really good team."

Koehn's 18 kills led another balanced attack. Sydney Huck had 14 kills and Addison Wimmer 13, with Huck adding a season-high 16 digs.  Jenna Karp chipped in eight kills.

Jaedynn Evans was brilliant in the back row once again with 27 digs, the third straight match she's had at least 25. Lindsey Houran handed out 46 assists to go along with 12 digs and Kaitlyn Parrott contributed 13 digs.

UCO fell behind 2-0 to start the opening set, came back to take a 6-5 lead on a Karp kill and went ahead to stay at 7-6 on Houran's dump at the net.

Koehn delivered a shot down the line to push the advantage to 12-7, the lead went to 19-13 on a Wimmer kill and it was still a six-point cushion when Koehn and Karp teamed up for a block to make it 23-17.

The Bearcats then reeled off six straight points to tie it, but UCO answered with back-to-back kills by Karp and Wimmer to close out the set.

The Bronchos never trailed in the second set, getting kills from Wimmer and Koehn to go up 2-0 early. It was close at 9-8 before Koehn had five kills in an 8-2 run that pushed the lead to 17-10.

NWMSU got within three at 23-20, with Wimmer and Huck sandwiching kills around a Bearcat point to take the set and grab a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

UCO trailed 6-5 in the third set before getting three Wimmer kills in a 6-2 run to seize the lead for good at 11-8. Huck and Karp had consecutive kills to push the cushion to 16-10 and put the Bearcats on the ropes.

NWMSU rallied, pulling even at 22 and then answering a Koehn kill to tie it again at 23-all. But the Bearcats faltered at the end, committing two straight errors to hand UCO the win that capped off the sweep.
