No. 19 Bronchos Knock Off No. 8 Lopers

EDMOND (Oct. 20) – Another balanced offensive assault powered No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma to a four-set upset of No. 8 Nebraska-Kearney Friday night at Hamilton Field House in a key Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association showdown.

Five players had double-digit kills as the Bronchos prevailed 25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 25-23, improving to 19-3 overall and 10-2 in the league with their sixth straight win. The Lopers fell to 21-2 and 11-2 in having a 12-match winning streak stopped.

"That was a tough match and I'm really proud of the way our team responded to the challenge," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We came out focused and ready to play. Everybody stepped up and we made a lot of big plays in key situations.

"It was a huge win for us, but we can't dwell on it and have to come back ready to go again tomorrow."

UCO hosts Fort Hays State at 2 p.m. Saturday before embarking on a five-match league road trip.

Setter Lindsey Houran played a pivotal role in the win with her ability to spread the ball around. She notched 57 assists – the fifth time this season she's had 50-plus – to go along with 13 digs and two kills.

Sydney Huck had a team-high 17 kills with three assisted blocks, while Lari Migliorino hit .360 with a season-high 14 kills and four assisted blocks. Addison Wimmer and Mallorie Koehn knocked down 12 kills apiece and Jenna Karp hit .500 with 11 kills and no errors in 22 attacks in addition to making four blocks (three solo, one assisted).

Jaedynn Evans had another clutch defensive outing in the back row, digging up 28 UNK attacks. Katie Le added 11 digs.

The Bronchos never trailed in the first set, jumping on top 3-0 as Huck and Migliorino teamed up for a block and Migliorino had a kill. The biggest lead came at 15-11 on a UNK error and the Lopers were within one at 23-22 following a UCO service error.

Huck came right back with a  shot down the line to make it 24-22 before another Loper error ended it.

There were 13 ties and six lead changes in the second set, with UNK scoring the final three points to turn a 24-23 deficit into a 26-24 win that tied the match.

But UCO would not be denied on this night.

The Bronchos led all the way in the third set, getting three Wimmer kills in grabbing a quick 4-0 lead. UNK never got closer than three the rest of the way as Migliorino finished the set with six kills.

It was more of the same in the fourth set as UCO once again never trailed. A Migliorino kill and two Loper errors gave the Bronchos a quick 3-0 lead and it was 10-5 after Wimmer hammered down a shot at the net.

Another Wimmer kill made it 22-18, but the Lopers rallied to within 23-22 in forcing a UCO timeout. UNK followed that with an error, then got to kill to make it 24-23 before Karp ended the match – and a five-match losing streak to the Lopers -- with a cross-court smash.
