Bronchos Win Five-Set Fight Against Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – No. 21 Central Oklahoma pulled out a strong five-set win on the road in the MIAA Saturday, beating Missouri Western 3-2.

The Bronchos dropped the first set before taking a 2-1 lead in the match. UCO got an early lead in the fifth and held off a fighting Griffon team that was on the Bronchos' heals in the league standings.

UCO is now 18-3 on the season and 9-2 in the MIAA. Missouri Western is 14-6 overall and 7-4 in league play.

"We had to work for this one against a good team," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "The girls did a really good job of fighting for this one. It's good to finish the weekend with two good wins."

Central Oklahoma swept Northwest Missouri on Friday night before beating Missouri Western Saturday night. The Bronchos return home next week and will host No. 9 Nebraska Kearney Friday night and Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon.

Addison Wimmer, Mallorie Koehn and Sydney Huck led the Bronchos with each landing more than a dozen kills. Lindsey Houran's 44 assists set the offense, which hit .179 Saturday night. Wimmer had 15 kills, and Koehn and Huck both had 14.

Jaedyn Evans led the defense with 32 digs, while Andrea Coady added 12 on the back row and Houran chipped in 10. The sophomore setter, Houran also had two block-assists in the match.

Central Oklahoma got off to a tough start Saturday, falling 20-25 in the first set. The Bronchos hit .079 with eight errors in the set.

But UCO recovered in a positive way. The Bronchos hit .316 in the second, blowing past the Griffons 25-16. Wimmer, Lari Migliorino, and Jenna Karp, each had four kills in the second set as the Bronchos led by as many 12 points in the frame.

That trio had four more in the third set as the Bronchos rolled to a close 25-22 decision. UCO got in front early and led by as many as five points twice early in the set. The lead grew to seven, 19-12, before a late Missouri Western rally. Central Oklahoma held that off though forcing miscues by the host Griffons.

The fourth set was close too, but had little change. After the Bronchos led 3-0, suddenly it was an 8-3 deficit for Central Oklahoma, which worked to keep it between three and five most of the way through the set. A late 4-0 run by the Bronchos got it down to two. An attack error by MWSU got it down to one, but the Bronchos couldn't get closer and the Griffons forced a fifth set with a 25-23 win.

UCO pulled away from MWSU with a 6-1 run early in the fifth set, going in front 10-5 before a timeout. Western then rallied to make it 11-10 UCO.

The Bronchos kept the Griffons at bay down the stretch, fighting off any ties down the stretch. Huck had one last kill to make it 14-12, then Koehn ended the match with a kill to give the Bronchos the 15-13 win.

Karp and Migliorino nearly finished with double-digit kills too. The junior Karp had nine kills to go with eight blocks and five digs. Migliorino had eight kills.

Koehn's 14 kills came with a .343 hitting percentage Saturday. The junior had just two errors on 35 attacks. She also added five digs and three blocks but polished off her game with six aces.
