Bronchos Power Past Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Jan. 29) – Being without six starters was no problem for top-ranked Central Oklahoma Sunday afternoon.

The Bronchos won six of the eight matches contested while also picking up two forfeits in cruising past outmanned Central Missouri 30-6,
improving to 11-1 on the season and 3-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

It was the 30th win in the last 31 outings for UCO, which stayed perfect against the Mules (45-0) in its final road dual of the season.

"It wasn't real pretty, but we'll take it," said seventh-year head coach Todd Steidley, who improved to 84-12 with the Bronchos. "We stood around too much and didn't do a whole lot offensively, which was disappointing.

"We held some guys out and thankfully we have the depth to do that. I thought the backups wrestled hard and I'm proud of what they bring to the team. We need to get everybody healthy and ready to go for the last two duals."

UCO ends the dual season at home, taking on No. 8 Adams State Friday night before finishing against No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney on Feb. 12. The Bronchos will have a couple of weeks off after that before hosting the NCAA Division II Regional IV Tournament on Feb. 26.

Central used backups at 133, 141, 149, 165, 197 and heavyweight, going 4-2 in those matches. Peter Rolle picked up a forfeit at 133, while 141 Josh Taylor, 197 Emmanuel Skillings and Hvy Braden Morgan all won.

Taylor scored a takedown and two-point near-fall in the final seconds of the first period to take a 4-0 lead and was up 6-1 after two before hanging on for an 8-6 victory.

Skillings sealed a 6-2 triumph on a takedown with 45 seconds remaining, while Morgan scored the only points in a 3-0 shutout with an escape and takedown in the second period.

UCO's four regulars all won, with Studd Morris earning the first of two Central Missouri forfeits at 125.

Third-ranked Gabe Johnson had a pair of first-period takedowns in a methodical 6-1 victory at 157, No. 10 Anthony DesVigne prevailed 2-1 on a riding time point at 174 and No. 11 Alex Kauffman coasted to an easy 8-2 win at 184 behind a three-takedown attack.

Mid-semester transfer Antonio George dropped a 4-0 decision to 10th-ranked Darick Lapaglia at 149 and Garrett Messimore – who has competed at 149 most of the season – fell 6-0 at 165.
