Arriola Wins Title At NEO Tourney

MIAMI, Okla. (Jan. 28) – Christian Arriola captured the heavyweight title with an overtime victory to lead a small contingent of Central Oklahoma wrestlers at the Golden Norsemen Open Saturday.

The Bronchos took eight individuals to the one-day event, five backups and three others who are redshirting this season, and returned with two placers.

Arriola went 5-0 with three bonus-point wins to take the gold medal after finishing runner-up twice and third once in three earlier open tournaments.

The junior big man breezed in his first three matches with a pair of first-period falls and a 27-12 technical fall before topping Oklahoma State's Hayden Simpson 7-2 in the semifinals.

Arriola clipped Northeastern Oklahoma A&M's Kale Schrader – ranked sixth in the junior college ranks – 3-1 on a takedown midway through the sudden-victory period in the title bout. He improved to 17-3 on the season.

Guy Clevenger was UCO's other placer, coming in third at 125 pounds. Clevenger dropped a 5-1 decision in the first round, but the redshirting freshmen bounced back with four straight consolation wins.

He had 17-0 and 16-1 technical falls on his way to the consolation finals, where he bested NEO's Peyton Brown 11-4 for third.
