UCO Golf Set To Open Season

Central Oklahoma makes its 2022-23 men's golf debut this week when the Bronchos trek to Winona, Minn. for the Regional Preview.

The two-day, 36-hole tournament tees off Tuesday morning at the 6,804 yard, par-71 The Bridges Golf Course, which will be the site for the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament next spring. Eighteen holes are on tap both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"I've heard it's a very unique golf course, so it's good that we get a chance to look at it this fall," said second-year head coach Derrick Thompson. "We're playing earlier than we usually do, but we didn't want to pass up a chance to see our regional golf course and play against such a strong field."

The Bronchos will take six players to the tournament – juniors Evan Griffith, Caleb Kimmel and Ross Taylor, sophomores Bennett Baldwin and Riley Harris and freshman Hogan Ordal.

"I was happy with what I saw during qualifying," Thompson said. "Five of our guys return from last year and their experience will help us. Hogan played well to earn himself a seat in the van and I'm excited to see him play his first college event. Being from Minnesota, he'll have quite a gallery."

UCO had top-five finishes in five of 12 tournaments last year, winning one title.

Griffith had the low scoring average last year at 74.12 and placed in the top 25 seven times. Kimmel was right behind at 74.71 with six top-25 showings and those two veterans were the lone players to compete in all 12 events.

Baldwin played in 11 tournaments and had four top-25 finishes in finishing with a 75.13 average. Taylor had a 75.74 average in seven outings, while Harris playing in four events with a 79.0 average.

It's the first of five tournaments UCO will play during the fall season. The Bronchos were picked for a third-place finish in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association that will be contested next spring, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
