UCO Calms Savage Storm

EDMOND (Sept. 3) – Clutch defense by Jaedynn Evans helped spark unbeaten Central Oklahoma to a hard-fought sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House on the second day of the UCO/OC Classic.

Evans came up with dig after dig on hard-hit SOSU attacks in the last two sets as the Bronchos pulled out a 25-14, 25-23, 27-25 victory. The sophomore libero had 30 digs for the match, including 23 in the final two sets.

UCO, now 8-0 on the season, finishes the two-day event later tonight when it goes to near-by Oklahoma City for a 7 p.m. contest at Oklahoma Christian.

"Jaedynn kept a lot of rallies alive for us and her defense was a big key for us in this match," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "It was a battle, but we found a way and made the plays we needed to in the last two sets."

Central got six kills apiece from Sydney Huck and Maegan Lacy in the first set and weren't tested in the 11-point rout, but the next two sets were anything but easy.

SOSU led virtually the entire second set and was up 21-17 before the Bronchos rallied. Kills by Hannah Barry and Courtney Lane coupled with a pair of Southeastern errors tied it at 21 and the teams were deadlocked again at 22 after another Barry kill.

UCO took its first lead of the set at 23-22 on Barry's smash down the middle, then the Savage Storm scored to pull even. But the Bronchos weren't to be denied, with Brynn Egger knocking down consecutive kills to complete the comeback.

Central jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the third set only to see SOSU reel off eight unanswered points in going ahead 11-9 and it was back-and-forth the rest of the way.

The Bronchos trailed 22-20 before tying it on a Lindsey Houran kill and SOSU error. Back-to-back kills by Huck gave UCO a 24-23 lead, but two straight attack errors gave the Savage Storm a 25-24 advantage.

Huck's rocket down the line tied it again, then the freshman sensation followed a Southeastern error with another kill to finish off the sweep.

Huck hit .400 with 10 kills and two errors in 20 attacks while playing just two sets to a balanced attack. UCO also got eight kills from Barry and Lacy, seven from Egger and six from Jenna Karp.

Houran was once again sharp in directing the offense as the freshman setter handed out 44 assists to go along with nine digs and two aces.
