Bronchos Clip Eagles To Stay Unbeaten

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 3) – Big scoring spurts carried Central Oklahoma past Oklahoma Christian Saturday night at the Eagles Nest in the final match of the two-day UCO/OC Classic.

The Bronchos scored eight straight points to take control in a 25-14 first-set rout, reeled off 10 unanswered points in rallying for a 25-18 second-set win and used an 10-3 spurt to pull out a 25-23 fourth-set victory. The Eagles claimed a 25-23 win in the third set, but UCO prevailed in the end to stay unbeaten.

Central improved to 9-0, its best start since opening the 2016 season 13-0. The Bronchos return to action Tuesday, traveling to Shawnee to take on Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. in the final non-conference match of the season.

"We had some big runs that made the difference," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Oklahoma Christian has a good team and it was a tough match at the end of a long week for us, so I was proud of the way the team battled. We were a little inconsistent, but fought our way through it."

Freshman Sydney Huck once again led UCO, knocking down 20 kills to go along with 17 digs and two service aces. Jenna Karp had a huge match at the net with 13 kills, 10 digs and seven blocks.

Hannah Barry contributed nine kills, while Courtney Lane and Mallorie Koehn chipped in eight kills apiece. The Bronchos also got 52 assists, nine digs and two kills from Lindsey Houran and Jaedynn Evans made 24 digs to pace the back-row defense.

The first set was tied 3-3 early when Karp took over. The sophomore middle blocker had three kills and two blocks in an 8-0 run that made it 11-3 and UCO coasted in from there.

OC grabbed an early lead in the second set and was up four at 15-11 when another big scoring surge put the Bronchos in control.

Koehn had three kills, Karp had two and the pair combined for two blocks as UCO ripped off 10 unanswered points in seizing a 21-15 lead and the Eagles got no closer.

The Bronchos had a chance to earn a sweep after pulling even at 23-all in the third set, but OC scored the next two points to stay alive and the fourth set was another battle.

UCO trailed 17-13 before two straight Lane aces sparked a 4-0 run that tied it. The Eagles scored the next two points, but Karp had an ace in another 4-0 spurt that gave the Bronchos a 21-19 advantage.

It was 24-22 after a Huck kill, then OC scored to get within a point before UCO Huck and Lane combined for a block that ended the match.
