Bronchos 10-0 After Win At OBU

Central Oklahoma Beat Oklahoma Baptist In Five Sets Tuesday In Shawnee

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma volleyball team finished non-conference play with a 10-0 record thanks to a huge five-set victory at Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday night.

"The girls fought hard for this one, we're really proud of them," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku. "We've been getting a little bit better day by day, and to be able to work for a tough one like this is very good. OBU is a really good team and these kinds of wins aren't easy."

Central Oklahoma dropped the first set before bouncing back with two big victories in the second and third sets. A slightly extended fourth set tipped OBU's way before the Bronchos won in the fifth – and did so scoring the final four points of the match.

Sydney Huck, Lindsey Houran and Jaedynn Evans all were named MIAA Athletes of the Week earlier Tuesday and the trio was terrific Tuesday night.

Huck, the league's Hitter of the Week, finished with 25 kills on a .281 hitting percentage. She added a pair of aces and got in on three block-assists. Houran, the Setter of the Week, steered the offense with 51 assists. She also had seven kills and two aces, 11 digs, and got in on two block-assists. Evans, the Defensive Player of the Week, led UCO's back line with 35 digs. She added one kill and three assists.

But Miraku also got help from more of his lineup.

Jenna Karp had another solid performance, putting home 13 kills to go with four blocks (two solo). Mallorie Koehn had nine kills and one block and Hannah Barry had seven kills and eight blocks (one solo).

Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Baptist were gridlocked from the first serve on Tuesday. The first set saw 12 ties and five lead changes.

Huck got the first point of the match with a kill to put UCO on the scoreboard. The Bronchos traded leads a few times before opening an 18-16 advantage on another Huck kill. But OBU rallied with four straight points to take advantage and despite two more ties late in the set, the Bison picked up the 25-23 win.

Central Oklahoma responded in the second set. There were four ties, but all in the first half of the frame. UCO took a 12-11 lead on a kill from Koehn and never looked back. The Bronchos scored the final four points of the set to take a 25-19 win and tie the match.

UCO trailed early in the third, but flipped it midway through and then ran away from the Bison. The score was 9-9 when Koehn put the Bronchos in front with a kill. Huck followed and Koehn picked up another to make it 12-9, and the Bronchos were off and running. UCO outscored OBU 16-4 following that earlier tie and won 25-13 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The slugfest continued in the fourth set. OBU took an early lead, but the Bronchos regained it midway through. OBU wouldn't let UCO run away again though and hung around before a late push tilted the set. Central's biggest lead was 21-18 before a 6-2 rally swung OBU in front. The Bison fought off the Bronchos to a 26-24 victory and tied the match, 2-2.

The theme continued into the final frame. OBU went up first, the Bronchos took a 7-4 lead, and the Bison fought back to take a 12-11 lead. But that's when UCO slammed the door shut.

Huck had a kill to tie it before back-to-back blocks by the Bronchos made it 14-12. Maegan Lacy and Barry scored the first block before Huck and Barry denied the second. Then on match point, Houran served up Huck for the big finish.

Huck scored the first and final points of the match with kills.

Central Oklahoma is 10-0 on the season for the third time in school history. The Bronchos went 15-0 in 2014, 13-0 in 2016, and 9-0 in 2013 – all under Miraku. Another 9-0 start came in 1994.

UCO now turns its attention to the MIAA. The Bronchos will open conference play this weekend against Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern. Central Oklahoma hosts PSU Friday at 6 p.m. and MSSU Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hamilton Field House.
