Bronchos Stay Perfect With Win Over SNU

EDMOND (Sept. 2) – Sydney Huck and Mallorie Koehn combined for 42 kills to spark unbeaten Central Oklahoma to a four-set triumph over Southern Nazarene Friday night in the UCO/OC Classic at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos dropped a narrow 26-24 decision in the first set before roaring back with three straight decisive wins (25-17, 25-12, 25-18) in moving to 7-0 on the season.

UCO wraps up the two-day event Saturday, hosting Southeastern Oklahoma at 12:30 p.m. before finishing with a 7 p.m. contest at Oklahoma Christian.

Huck knocked down 22 kills and Koehn added 20 to lead the way.

"It's pretty rare to have two players with 20 kills apiece," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Sydney and Mallorie had a lot of great swings and played really well. We're a young team that still makes a lot of mistakes, but they're working hard and we're getting better."

Jenna Karp added 11 kills, Courtney Lane chipped in seven and Hannah Barry was big at the net with seven total blocks. Lindsey Houran handed out 52 assists, while Jaedynn Evans had another strong defensive outing with 35 digs.

UCO had a chance to take the first set that saw 20 lead changes and ties after grabbing a 24-23 lead on Huck's kill, but the Crimson Storm scored three straight points to take the win.

The Bronchos rebounded in the second set, getting four kills each from Koehn and Karp. UCO had a narrow 19-17 lead before closing with a 6-0 run to win going away, getting two kills and a block from Koehn in that stretch.

UCO breezed in the third set to take control of the match. Koehn had three early kills as the Bronchos zipped to a 9-2 lead and Huck had three straight during the later stages of that rout.

Karp had two kills while Huck had a kill and service ace in a 5-0 run that turned a 10-all tie into a 15-10 lead in the fourth set. UCO extended its cushion to 21-11 before coasting in to finish off the match.
