Bronchos Roll Past ECU

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma volleyball team beat East Central 3-1 Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House to improve to 5-0 on the season. The Bronchos are now 1-0 at home in 2022.

"We played well overall even though we gave away that first set," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We didn't come out ready to play, but we got focused and did a good job overall. We just need to keep improving and learning from our experiences."

Mallorie Koehn led UCO with 11 kills and Lari Migliorino added 10. Lindsey Houran set the Broncho attack with 43 assists in the match. Jenna Karp added one solo and five block assists, Migliorino had one and four, and Sydney Huck, who had seven kills, added five block assists. Jaedynn Evans led the defense with 35 digs.

Central Oklahoma came out a bit slow and never led in the first set Wednesday night. The Bronchos trailed by five early and ECU used that momentum to carry through the set for a 25-22 win. Migliorino had five kills in the first set to help UCO.

Central rebounded after that and demolished the Tigers from Ada in the second set. Migliorino had a service error that tied the game, 3-3, but a kill from Karp started a rare and dominating 13-0 run by the Bronchos.

Karp had four kills during the rally, Huck had two, and Courtney Lane also had two. Huck, who served throughout the rally, also had two aces. Central soon led 16-3 and went on to win the set 25-11.

East Central had an early lead (2-0) in the third set but when the Bronchos turned it, they never looked back. Migliorino had four kills in the third set. UCO had eight blocks in the frame.

UCO put it away in the final set to take the win. Maegan Lacy had six kills in the fourth and Mallorie Koehn added five.

Karp finished with eight kills to go with her stellar defensive effort. Lacy had six and Lane had five.

Central Oklahoma will have a day off before hosting the UCO-OC Tournament this weekend at Hamilton. The Bronchos will play St. Mary's (Texas) Friday at 11 a.m. and Southern Nazarene Friday at 6 p.m. A matchup with Southeastern Oklahoma State is scheduled for Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and then UCO wraps up the weekend with a match against co-host Oklahoma Christian in Oklahoma City.
