UCO Defangs Rattlers

EDMOND (Sept. 2) – Four players collected double-digit kills and Central Oklahoma toppled St. Mary's in four sets to stay unbeaten Friday morning in opening-day action of the UCO/OC Classic at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos prevailed 25-16, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17 in improving to 6-0, their best start since opening the 2016 season 13-0. UCO is back in action at 6 p.m. against Southern Nazarene.

Sophomore Mallorie Koehn led a balanced offensive attack with 16 kills, while a trio of freshmen also had 10-plus kills -- Sydney Huck (15), Maegan Lacy (13) and Lari Migliorino (10).

"We got off to a good start and then had a little letdown in the third set, but overall it was a pretty good effort," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We moved the ball around well and got good contributions from a lot of players."

Lindsey Houran had a stellar outing directing the UCO attack, finishing with 55 assists and 11 digs. Jaedynn Evans led the back-row defense with 30 digs, with 11 of those coming in the second set.

The Bronchos trailed only once in the opening set and that at 1-0. Back-to-back kills by Migliorino and Huck along with a Migliorino ace put UCO on top 3-1 and the lead was 9-4 after a Jenna Karp ace.

St. Mary's got no closer and the Bronchos cruised the rest of the way, with Huck finishing with six kills to lead the first-set effort.

The Rattlers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set before UCO rallied. Huck's ace put the Bronchos on top for good at 10-9, then an SMU error and consecutive Lacy kills pushed the advantage to 13-9.

Lacy added three more kills the rest of the way as Central coasted in to take command of the match.

St. Mary's staved off elimination with its third-set win and then took a 3-0 lead in the fourth. The Bronchos scored three straight to pull event and it went back-and-forth until Koehn's shot down the line put UCO ahead to stay at 13-12.

Lacy had three kills and Huck two the rest of the way as the Bronchos went on to close out the match.
