Central Oklahoma Tops Crookston

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Central Oklahoma continued its opening weekend play in the Northern Michigan Open Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Minnesota Crookston.

Central won the first two sets 25-17 before conceding the third set. But the Bronchos finished strong with a 25-16 win in the fourth set to take the match.

"We're getting a little bit better with each match and that's the hope for this weekend," UCO head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We played well today and we want to finish strong with our last match up here."

UCO, now 3-0 on the young season, plays Cedarville (Ohio) Saturday afternoon to wrap up the tourney.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead in the first set and never looked back. The Bronchos went in front 3-2 on a kill from freshman Maegan Lacy and didn't trail the rest of the set. UCO led by as much as eight on a few different occasions before taking the opening frame 25-17.

Sydney Huck led the Bronchos with six first-set kills and Lacy had four herself.

The Bronchos trailed for the first time in the match early in the second set, but again, after taking a 3-2 lead, this time from an attack error by UMC, Central didn't look back. The Bronchos led by as many as 10 in the second set and rolled to a 25-17 win again to take the 2-0 lead in the match.

Jenna Karp had four kills and a block to lead UCO in the second set.

Minnesota Crookston won its only point with a 25-17 win in the third set. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead and stayed in front for the entire set.

The Bronchos responded with a big fourth set win to take the match. The set was tied 4-4 and again 8-8 before Central took the lead for good. UCO trailed 8-7 before three consecutive bad sets gave the Bronchos a 10-8 lead. UCO led by as many as nine, which came on the final point. Karp slammed home the match-clinching kill.

Courtney Lane led Central with five kills in the fourth set.

Lane and Karp both led UCO on the day with 11 kills each. Karp finished with two blocks. Lacy and Huck both finished with eight kills. Lari Migliorino had five kills and two blocks.

Lindsey Houran had a team-high 29 assists Saturday and she joined Karp and Migliorino with two blocks. Houran also led the Bronchos with 14 digs while Jaedynn Evans added 10.

Central Oklahoma will wrap up the two-day, four-match Northern Michigan Open against Cedarville Saturday evening. UCO is scheduled to make its 2022 home debut Wednesday, Aug. 31 against East Central with first serve set for 6 p.m. at Hamilton Field House.
