Bronchos Win The Weekend

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Central Oklahoma opened the 2022 season with four matches at the Northern Michigan Open and the Bronchos ended the weekend 4-0.

UCO beat Cedarville (Ohio) Saturday evening to complete the unblemished weekend. UCO picked up a 3-1 win against Lake Superior State before sweeping Bemidji State. Earlier Saturday, the Bronchos beat Minnesota Crookston 3-1 before sweeping Cedarville.

"It was good to get four wins," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We're a really young team and knew we would have some work to do, but everyone did a good job coming together and working together and it was a good weekend."

Central's young roster didn't show signs of lacking this weekend. Sydney Huck posted a stout 16 kills Saturday against Cedarville to go along with 11 digs and five service aces. Lindsey Houran had 31 assists to lead the attack. Both are true freshmen.

Lari Migliorino, also a freshman, had nine kills while junior Courtney Lane and sophomore Mallorie Koehn had seven kills each.

Jaedynn Evans led the defensive effort with 12 digs ahead of Huck's 11.

There were eight ties and four lead changes in Saturday's first set against Cedarville. But when Koehn broke a 13-13 tie with a kill to put the Bronchos in front, UCO outscored CU 11-2 to close the set with a 25-15 win.

Huck had five kills and two aces in the first set while Koehn had four of her seven kills.

Central Oklahoma spent much of the second set behind. The set was tied on three different occasions, but the Bronchos couldn't get over the hump for most of the set. But then Migliorino's kill put UCO up 18-17 and Central pulled away for a 25-21 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Huck had six kills in the second set and Migliorino matched it.

There were two lead changes in the third and final set but the Bronchos took control much earlier. Lane put UCO in front 9-8 with the second of her three kills in the set, and the Bronchos never trailed again on their way to a 25-20 third set victory to complete the sweep.

Huck pounded home the final point for her 16th kill of the match. A freshman from McKinney, Texas, Huck posted 18 kills in her collegiate debut Friday before back-to-back matches with eight kills each Friday night and Saturday afternoon. She finished the weekend with 50 kills, hitting .393 in four games, with an average of 3.85 kills per set.

Houran, a freshman from Colleyville, Texas, totaled 117 assists in her first four career games, averaging 8.36 per set on the weekend.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to make its home debut Wednesday, Aug. 31 against East Central. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. at Hamilton Field House.
