Bronchos Open Season With Tough Win

MARQUETTE, Mich. (Aug. 26) – Freshman Sydney Huck had an impressive debut in leading Central Oklahoma to a season-opening win over Lake Superior State Friday morning on the first day of the Northern Michigan Invitational.

The rookie outside hitter from McKinney, Texas collected 18 kills, six digs and two assists as the Bronchos squeezed out a 23-25, 25-22, 32-30, 25-17 victory. UCO returns to action against Bemidji State at 4 p.m., then plays Minnesota-Crookston (12 p.m.) and Cedarville (4 p.m.) on Saturday to finish off the two-day event.

"It wasn't pretty by any means, but I was proud of the way the team battled and we found a way to get it done," said 11th-year head coach Edgar Miraku. "We obviously made a lot of mistakes, which was to be expected for the first match and with such a young team."

Huck had a stellar .368 hitting percentage in leading UCO's youthful squad, collecting her 18 kills in 38 attacks with just four errors. The Bronchos also got big contributions from two other freshmen – Lindsey Houran (38 assists, two kills) and Lari Migliorino (six kills, four assists).

Jenna Karp hit .412 with nine kills and two errors in 17 attempts, while Mallorie Koehn chipped in seven digs and six kills  and Courtney Lane four kills. Jaedynn Evans (19 digs) and Katie Le (12) led the back-row defense.

The first set was a back-and-forth battle throughout. UCO trailed 12-11 before surging in front 14-12 on back-to-back kills by Huck and an LSSU attack error.

A Koehn kill had the Bronchos up 15-13, then the Lakers scored the next three points to move ahead for good. UCO stayed close down the stretch and was within 24-23 when Karp knocked down at shot at the net, but Lake Superior scored the next point to take the set.

Central bounced back to take the second set in squaring the match, jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead only to see the Lakers rally in front 7-6. The lead went back-and-forth until the Bronchos used a series of LSSU errors to take a 17-14 lead.

UCO stayed in front the rest of the way, getting a key solo block from Huck and a Houran kill to keep the Lakers at bay before Migliorino's kill closed it out.

The Broncho used a big rally to claim the third set, overcoming an early 9-2 deficit to take the thrilling 32-30 victory. Huck and Karp had two kills apiece to get the comeback started and UCO pulled even at 16 on Lane's shot down the line.

The teams traded leads the rest of the way, with both having several chances to take the win. Lake Superior led 25-24 and were serving for the set, but Huck's kill tied it and an attack error put the Bronchos in front 26-25.

LSSU responded this time with two straight points to reclaim a 27-26 lead and the Lakers served for the set again at 28-27. UCO stayed alive both times, went ahead a final time at 31-30 on a Laker error and Lane's kill finally ended the drama.

Huck had eight kills in the fourth set, including four during an impressive 15-4 run that turned a 13-10 deficit into a 25-17 victory that gave the Bronchos the match.

Kills by Karp and Migliorino along with a solo block by Maegan Lacy started the game-deciding surge and tied the match at 13-all. An attack error put UCO ahead, the Lakers tied it with a kill and then the Bronchos reeled off six straight points to take control.

Migliorino started that streak with a kill and Huck had two as Central took a 20-14 lead. Huck had two more kills, while Karp and Lacy had one apiece the rest of the way to help the Bronchos polish off the win.
