UCO Rolls Past Bemidji To Finish 2-0 Day

MARQUETTE, Mich. (Aug. 26) – Mallorie Koehn knocked down a career-high 10 kills and Central Oklahoma overwhelmed Bemidji State Friday evening to complete first-day play in the Northern Michigan Invitational.

The Bronchos dominated from start to finish in a 25-16, 25-14, 25-12 rout, following up a four-set win over Lake Superior State that started the day in the season-opening weekend.

UCO (2-0) finishes the two-day event Saturday, taking on Minnesota-Crookston at 12 p.m. and Cedarville at 4 p.m. The Bronchos make their home debut Wednesday, Aug. 31, hosting East Central at 6 p.m.

"We played better than our first match and that was good to see," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "There's a lot of room for growth with this team since we're so young, but I liked the way we competed today."

Koehn, a sophomore outside hitter from Wichita, Kan., led the way against the Beavers. She needed just 17 attacks to collect her 10 kills against two errors in hitting .471 in addition to having five digs and three service aces.

Freshman Sydney Huck followed up her 18-kill outing in the opener with eight kills and four digs, while Jenna Karp had seven kills and three blocks. UCO also got 19 assists, six digs and two kills from Lindsey Houran, 12 digs from Jaedynn Evans and seven digs with two aces from Katie Le.

The dominating win started slow, with the two teams tied at 4-all early in the opening set. But it was all UCO after that.

A bad set put the Bronchos ahead to stay, Karp followed with a smash at the net and Evans delivered back-to-back service aces before Koehn drove a shot down the line to make it 9-4.

The Beavers made a kill to get within 9-5, but two Huck kills and another by Koehn during a 5-0 run pushed the cushion to 14-5. It was 19-9 after another Huck kill and UCO coasted in from there.

Koehn continued her impressive outing in the second set, serving up two early aces to help the Bronchos to a quick 5-0 lead. Bemidji hung tough early and pulled within two at 10-8 before UCO once again took command.

Koehn had two kills, while Karp and Houran each had one as the lead grew to 16-10. The Beavers got no closer the rest of the way, with Huck adding three kills down the stretch to close out the second-set rout.

The final set was fairly close in the early stages before UCO finally took control again.

Karp had two kills and two blocks, while Koehn added a kill, block and ace in a 9-2 run that turned a 13-8 lead into a 22-10 cushion and the Bronchos cruised in from there to finish off the sweep.
