Minter Powers UCO Past Lions

EDMOND (April 6) – Jacee Minter slugged a pair of home runs to highlight a 13-hit assault that powered Central Oklahoma to an 11-3 drubbing of Missouri Southern Friday afternoon in the MIAA Softball Championship at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The No. 5-ranked Bronchos improved to 45-9 – the fourth-most wins in school history – in bouncing back from Thursday night's upset loss to Nebraska-Kearney. UCO will face Missouri Western at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the double-elimination tournament and would play again at 5:30 with a win.

Minter and Shayla Harper had three hits apiece, while Tarin Dubler and Terin Ritz had two each as the Bronchos scored in double digits for the 14th time this season. Minter's two homers tied a UCO record shared by many and she also drove in six runs, the third-most in a single game.

"Our offense set the tone early," head coach Cody White said. "We came out aggressive and stayed that way, which is how we like to play. We still have a long road ahead of us, but just need to keep playing hard and take it one game at a time."

Harper got the Bronchos off to a quick start, driving the first pitch of the game down the left field line for a lead-off double. Harper moved to third on Brighton Gilbert's sacrifice, then scored when MSSU's third baseman threw the ball away on Dubler's bunt single.

Minter followed with a single to right field and UCO scored twice more. Dubler came home on a passed ball and Minter ended up scoring on an error to make it 3-0.

Minter drove in a run with a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the top of the second, then the Lions got the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the frame.

The Bronchos upped the lead to 7-1 in the fourth. Gilbert and Dubler reached on consecutive one-out errors before Minter smashed her first homer, this one a high fly ball to straightaway center field.

Gilbert's two-out RBI single made it 8-1 in the top of the fifth, with MSSU coming back for two runs in its next at bat to get within 8-3.

UCO put the finishing touches on the rout in the top of the seventh. Harper led off with a first-pitch single to center field and ended up scoring on Dubler's bloop single to right, then Minter finished her big game with a no-doubt drive to center for her 12th homer of the season.

Kylee Lynch went the distance in the circle to pick up the pitching win, scattering five hits in improving to 24-2 with her 19th complete game. The Bronchos were flawless in the field once again, highlighted by center fielder Lexy Dobson's diving grab in the sixth.
